Continued emphasis by the automotive industry on improving long term engine sealability has escalated the demand for high quality, extended performance silicone rubber gaskets. Accommodation of sharp, irregular surfaces during engine assembly and facilitation of hot demolding of complex configurations during fabrication are essential requirements of this application not met by traditional silicone rubber seal compounds. Conversely, typical “high strength” silicones do not exhibit the desired combination of low compression set, heat age, and oil resistance necessary for long term sealing peformance. This paper describes a new family of high strength silicone rubber compounds which integrates superior performance with improved processing characteristics in a highly reproducible manufacturing process.
