Latest Technologies Applied to Automatic Transmission Maji-Band™

2006-04-03
2006-01-0356
Various products with paper-based wet-friction material have been developed for smoother shifting of automatic transmissions. Band brakes have been featured as friction engagement elements for planetary gears, which provide higher holding-torque capacity than same-size multiple friction-disk brakes caused by a self-energizing mechanism. The advantages that should be focused on are better shift quality for the release element during up shifting because of the different torque capacity in the drum rotating direction. In 1988, BorgWarner developed the Maji-Band for band brakes (coiled-steel straps joined into bands), which is lightweight and compact, and provides approximately 3.5 times higher torque capacity than single wrapped band brakes and lower drag torque than multiple friction-disk brakes. However, it is difficult to control shift quality as the engaging element for upshifting is caused by instability in attaining the required torque to dynamically follow the servo-applied force.

AISIN AW New High Torque Capacity Six-Speed Automatic Transmission for FWD vehicles

AISIN AW has developed a new FWD 6-speed automatic transmission “TF-80SC” for luxury cars with high torque engines. This newly developed automatic transmission (A/T) is based on the concept of the FWD 6-speed A/T “TF-60SN” that we have already introduced to the world market. The basic concept for the 6-speed A/T is to achieve weight saving and compact as well as better fuel efficiency and driving performance in comparison with conventional 5-speed A/Ts. Of course the shift feel must be the top level in the world, so we increased torque capacity of the TF-80SC to cover luxury cars with high torque engine. One of the outstanding features of the A/T is an advanced band brake that allows simultaneous pursuits of high capacity, weight saving, size reduction and high efficiency as well as high-quality shift feeling qualified for luxury cars. This paper describes the advantages and structure of the new A/T with a focus on our approach to new technology of the band brake system.

AISIN AW New Six-Speed Automatic Transmission for FWD Vehicles

AISIN AW has developed a six-speed automatic transmission TF-60SN for front wheel drive (FWD) vehicles. This new TF-60SN has been developed based on the concepts of minimizing length and mass increase as compared with current five-speed automatic transmissions, and providing the world's first transverse FWD six-speed automatic transmission. This has been accomplished using a newly developed planetary gear set, and a new “squeezed” torque converter. In addition, the control system features a unique design that maintains outstanding compactness and achieves a high quality smooth shift feeling. This paper describes the construction, characteristics, and functions of this six-speed automatic transmission.

AISIN AW has developed a five-speed automatic transmission “55-50SN” for front wheel drive (FWD) vehicles. This new 55-50SN has been developed with a concept to minimize length and mass increase compared with the current four-speed automatic transmission, and is one of the most compact five-speed automatic transmissions in the world. This has been accomplished by newly developed planetary gear sets, a new differential, and a new squeezed torque converter. In addition, the control system is made by a unique design to maintain the excellent compactness and to achieve a high quality smooth shift feeling. This paper describes the construction, characteristic, and function of this five-speed automatic transmission.

Automatic Neutral Control - A New Fuel Saving Technology for Automatic Transmission

AISIN AW has developed a new fuel saving technology called the Automatic Neutral Control System which is installed in the 50-40LN automatic transmission. While idling with the brake applied, the system shifts the transmission into neutral by automatically releasing its forward clutch, so that the slipping loss of the torque converter is eliminated and less fuel is required to maintain the idling of the engine it shifts back to drive when the foot brake is released or the accelerator pedal is pressed. A folly integrated electro-hydraulic circuit and unique control principle were designed to provide very precise pressure to the forward clutch. As a result, we have confidence that a highly reliable system has been achieved with large improvements in fuel consumption.

Aisin AW New Four-Speed Automatic Transmission for FWD Vehicles

Aisin AW has developed a new lightweight, compact automatic transmission: the 60-40LE. The 60-40LE is designed for small cars of up to 1.6L engine displacement. The transmission is an electronically controlled, 4-speed, front wheel drive transaxle utilizing a unique, compact planetary gear train. This new planetary gear train, combining a dual planetary gearset, establishes the shortest shaft length of its kind. The electronic control system allows for improved shift quality. Application of a linear solenoid allows for optimum control, especially during 2nd to 3rd gear shifting and shifting without the application of a one-way clutch.
