In 2021, 4,12,432 road accidents were reported in India claiming 1,53,972 fatalities and injuring 3,84,448 people. India ranks top with the highest number of road traffic fatalities which account for 11% of the world traffic-related deaths. Hence, it is important to explore the fundamental causes of those accidents on Indian roads. The objective of the present study is to determine the inherent factors involved in Indian accidents using self-organizing map-based clustering analysis. Also, the present study attempts to recommend some countermeasures based on the factors identified. This study used Indian accident data collected by members of ICAT-ADAC (International Centre for Automotive Technology - Accident Data Analysis Centre), under a joint ICAT-RNTBCI project, approved by the Ministry of Heavy Industries, Govt. of India. 239 cases from urban & semi-urban road types, around the Chennai region were used for this analysis.
