Development of Plug-In Hybrid System for Midsize Car

In recent years, many various energy sources have been investigated as replacements for traditional automotive fossil fuels to help reduce CO₂ emissions, respond to instabilities in the supply of fossil fuels, and reduce emissions of air pollutants in urban areas. Toyota Motor Corporation considers the plug-in hybrid vehicle, which can use electricity efficiently, to be the most practical current solution to these issues. For this reason, Toyota began sales of the Prius plug-in hybrid in early 2012 in both the U.S. and Japan. This is the first plug-in hybrid vehicle to be mass-produced by Toyota Motor Corporation. Prior to this, in December 2009, Toyota sold 650 plug-in hybrid vehicles through lease programs for verification testing in the U.S., Europe, and Japan. The system of the recently launched mass-produced vehicle underwent major improvements in response to the results of this verification testing. As a result, EV range was increased with a smaller battery.

Progress and Challenges in Toyota's Fuel Cell Vehicle Development

This paper describes an outline of the Toyota FCHV-adv, a fuel cell vehicle with a practical cruising range of more than 500 km. The cold startability of the FCHV-adv was improved by modifying the FC stack and control system. As a result, the FCHV-adv is capable of starting at a temperature of -30°C. In the future, Toyota intends to improve durability and reduce costs and is continuing to cooperate with governments and energy businesses to establish infrastructure and make the necessary modifications to laws and regulations.

Development of Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle in TOYOTA

The outline of the TOYOTA FCHV-adv is described in this paper. The TOYOTA FCHVadv achieved an approximately 25 percent improvement in vehicle fuel efficiency and about 1.9 times the amount of usable hydrogen in comparison with the previous model. These improvements have enabled almost 2.5 times longer practical cruising range, more than 500 km. The freeze start capabilities of the FCHV-adv were improved by modifying the FC stack and control system. As a result, the FCHV-adv has been capable of starting at a temperature of -30°C. In the future, TOYOTA intends to improve durability and reduce costs.

Advanced Development of Speech Enabled Voice Recognition Enabled Embedded Navigation Systems

This paper will focus on the technology improvements and development effort required to enable human sounding system responses and voice enablement for destination entry for automotive navigation systems. Honda and IBM have been working together since around 1999. The first product to reveal the fruits of this relationship was the 2003 Accord. Voice enablement consists of speech recognition of a Radio/Audio, Climate Control, or Navigation related command, and providing voice responses using a combination of prerecorded messages combined with Text-To-Speech (TTS) generated outputs. The Accord in 2003 used a combination of high quality prerecorded prompts with occasional use of TTS synthesis. The 2005 Acura RL and Odyssey introduced use of Concatenative (human sounding) TTS. This paper will discuss the trade-offs and design considerations for the use of Concatenative TTS as opposed to Formant TTS technology.

Electro-Hydraulic Control System for AISIN AW New 6-Speed Automatic Transmission

Recently, 5-speed automatic transmissions have become mainstream through the world, and 6-speed automatic transmissions have also been introduced in the market. Consequently, the issue of shift control is gaining importance, and a trend toward increasing number of gears in automatic transmissions has become apparent. On the other hand, weight saving and downsizing of the transmission, including the hydraulic control unit, are strongly required in order to promote fuel efficiency. To meet these requirements, an electro-hydraulic control unit offering sophisticated functionality desired in order to provide excellent shift quality. As an answer to these requirements AISIN AW developed two types of new 6-speed automatic transmissions in 2002: “TR-60SN” for RWD vehicles and “TF-60SN” for FWD vehicles. Both TR-60SN and TF-60SN have the same structural characteristics.
