Development of Electronically Controlled Belt-type CVT for Motorcycles

An electronically controlled belt-type CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) has been developed for scooter type two-wheeled vehicles. Related to two-wheeled vehicles, the electronically controlled belt-type CVT has advantages over the conventional belt-type CVT, such as more compact and lighter weight. This was achieved by developing a new rubber belt-type. The new rubber belt-type CVT uses a rubber belt with high friction coefficient and pulleys made of aluminum. To obtain good shifting characteristics, the desired speed ratio related to throttle opening and drive speed is calculated. When moving, the actual speed ratio automatically adjusts to the desired value. For the shift modes, three shift modes, two automatic modes and one manual mode with six-speeds were prepared. The electronically controlled CVT increased the range of usable engine speeds compared to the conventional belt-type CVT. Therefore good drivability is maintained.

Development of Engine Valve Seats Directly Deposited onto Aluminum Cylinder Head by Laser Cladding Process

A new technologies for manufacturing of engine valve seats have been developed. This process, different from the conventional method that valve seats made of sintered alloy were press-fit into the cylinder head, is directly formed valve seats onto cylinder head by using the laser cladding technique. In order to develope the cylinder head with laser cladding valve seats, the laser cladding technology by which copper based alloy is deposited onto aluminum alloy with little dilution and stable bead has been established. And the unique cladding alloy, which is two phases in the liquid stage and in which iron or molybdenum rich hard particles are dispersed in the solid state, has been developed. Based on this technique, the practical process has been successfully completed.

Application Of Laser Cladding For Engine Valve

The application of laser cladding process for engine valve-face coating is discussed. It was found that the high quality and cost saving engine valves could be obtained by thinning the coating layer and controlling the ranges of base metal dillution from 5 to 15%. And, after some efficiency tests, it became clear that the laser cladded engine valves had the same anti-wear property as the oxy-acetylen gas welded engine valves.
