Superior Idle Elimination System for Truck Air-conditioning (SIESTA)

2003-03-03
2003-01-0216
This no-idle climate control (NICC) system designed for heavy commercial and military vehicles (class 8 line haulers) will decrease emissions, cost, and fuel usage without sacrificing crew comfort. The system is designed for the sleeper cabin of the commercial trucks and crew compartment of the military trucks. During the night, truck drivers tend to idle the engine in order to provide heating or cooling while they sleep. This system will provide that comfort at approximately 13% of the fuel usage. Military personnel will also benefit by the ability to supply heating or cooling to the crew compartment during silent watch operations. This quiet solution to crew comfort along with the reduction in pollution and energy consumption will position this NICC system for commercial success.

High-Temperature Waste Heat Driven Cooling Using Sorption Media

1993-07-01

Complex Compounds are solid-gas sorption media with the coordinative bond (sharing one or more electrons) established between metal inorganic salt-based adsorbents and polar refrigerants, such as ammonia, sulfur dioxide, and water. Complex compounds utilize this unique bond to sorb large amounts of refrigerant in a process that is reversible and provides large temperature lifts in single-stage hardware, allowing for their application to heat pump processes under adverse conditions. This paper describes the ongoing development of a solid-vapor complex-compound prototype heat pump suitable for lunar base operation. Working conditions are 4-15°C cooling and 82-93°C heat rejection.
