Role of CFD in Heavy Machinery Development

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) can make major contributions to heavy machinery development by revealing the details of complex fluid flow and heat transfer processes, by identifying controlling variables, trends and tradeoffs, and finally by providing a rational basis for design innovation. Without computational studies, either design rules of thumb must be followed, or numerous experiments must be performed which are costly and time consuming. CFD now plays a critical role in the product development, from the conceptual stage, to the detailed design and evaluation of a product. This article discusses the role of CFD in heavy machinery development.

Fluid flow and heat transfer disciplines are increasingly becoming important in the development of agricultural and construction equipment (AG&CE). This technology solves problems related to cooling, engine intake and exhaust, HVAC, sizing/shaping ducts, fans, farming implements, etc. Lately, the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation tools early in the product development has been reducing product evaluation and development times significantly. This paper highlights the successful application of CFD tools to solve various problems in the agricultural and construction machinery development process. It also briefly describes the integration of CFD with the product development.

The application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to external and internal flows in automotive industry has grown tremendously when compared to the off-highway industry in the last decade. The purpose of this article is to share recent developments on the applications of CFD in off-highway industry, specially at Case. A thorough 3D CFD analysis was done for the cab A-post louver designs and a conceptual design optimization was done to improve the operator comfort in the cab.
