Design Guidelines and Concepts for Zero-Gap Bedplate Sealing

1999-03-01
1999-01-0593
The ongoing target to reduce the noise and vibration leads to the configuration of the crankcase in an upper part and a lower part in which the supports for the crank shaft bearings are already integrated. Difficulties in sealing the bed plate to the crankcase are evident when the material for the bed plate is Aluminum. A bed plate application allows only metal to metal contact. This is the reason why rigid gaskets are not suitable and why liquid gaskets are the only alternative. The right use of liquid gaskets for the bed plate will be illustrated in this report.

The New Challenge for Sealant Supplier - A Partnership with the Automotive Industry

1996-02-01
960212
A new request from an engine designer led to an interesting partnership between a sealant supplier and the Automotive Industry. The target of this project was to achieve high quality and zero defects when using engine sealants. This was achieved through the symbiosis of the right adhesive, proper design and improved dispensing equipment. It was not a question of which kind of product would fulfill the requirements, but of working as a team to design the right criteria for using the best adhesive for this application. Using the example of a German automotive manufacturer, the experiences, mistakes, and results of this successful partnership approach will be illustrated.
