Membrane-Based Nitrogen-Enriched Air for NOx Reduction in Light-Duty Diesel Engines

The effects of nitrogen-enriched air, supplied by an air separation membrane, on NOx emissions from a 1.9-L turbocharged direct-injection diesel engine were investigated. To enrich combustion air with more nitrogen, prototype air separation membranes were installed between the after-cooler and intake manifold without any additional controls. The effects of nitrogen-enriched combustion air on NOx emissions were compared with and without exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). At sufficient boost pressures (>50 kPag), nitrogen-enriched air from the membrane provided intake oxygen levels that were similar to those of EGR. Compared with EGR, nitrogen-enriched air provided 10-15% NOx reductions during medium to high engine loads and speeds. At part loads, when turbocharger boost pressure was low, the air separation membrane was not effective in enriching air with nitrogen. As a result, NOx reduction was lower, but it was 15-25% better than when EGR was not used.

Batteries for Electric Drive Vehicles: Evaluation of Future Characteristics and Costs Through a Delphi Study

Uncertainty about future costs and operating attributes of electric drive vehicles (EVs and HEVs) has contributed to considerable debate regarding the market viability of such vehicles. One way to deal with such uncertainty, common to most emerging technologies, is to pool the judgments of experts in the field. Data from a two-stage Delphi study are used to project the future costs and operating characteristics of electric drive vehicles. The experts projected basic vehicle characteristics for EVs and HEVs for the period 2000-2020. They projected the mean EV range at 179 km in 2000, 270 km in 2010, and 358 km in 2020. The mean HEV range on battery power was projected as 145 km in 2000, 212 km in 2010, and 244 km in 2020. Experts' opinions on 10 battery technologies are analyzed and characteristics of initial battery packs for the mean power requirements are presented.

Measurement and Evaluation of Surfaces By Evaporative Rate Analysis III Quality of Seal on Anodized Aluminum

First studies of the quality of seal of anodized aluminum through measurement and evaluation of the surface by evaporative rate analysis of an added test solution showed a generally orderly response; that is, the greater the extent of seal, the more rapid the evaporation of the test material. However, more detailed studies have shown some marked anomalies in evaporative response; quantitative data are presented herein for the first time. The evidence presented indicates that even modest high humidity aging of nonboil sealed surfaces is superior to any boil sealing insofar as desorptive phenomena are concerned.
