Of all the metals investigated for use in ultrahigh temperature service, chromium appears to be the most promising, especially as the alloy Chrome-30 developed by Bendix. Chromium composites, sometimes called “dirty chromium,” have demonstrated excellent mechanical properties, oxidation resistance, and fabricability. These characteristics may well contribute to their applicability in temperature ranges where present-day materials are not feasible, as in space craft. Present research indicates this to be a major breakthrough in development of a high temperature material.
