A Combustion Heat Release Correlation for CAI Combustion Simulation in 4-Stroke Gasoline Engines

One-dimensional engine simulation programmes are often used in the engine design and optimization studies. One of the key requirements of such a simulation programme is its ability to predict the heat release process during combustion. Such simulation software has built in it the heat release models for spark ignited premixed flame and compression ignited diesel combustion. The recent emergence of Controlled Auto Ignition (CAI) combustion, also known as Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI), has generated the need for a third type of heat release models for this new combustion process. In this paper, a heat release correlation for CAI combustion has been derived from extensive in-cylinder pressure data obtained from a Ricardo E6 single cylinder research engine and a multi-cylinder Port Fuel Injection (PFI) gasoline engine running with CAI combustion. The experimental data covered a wide range of air/fuel ratios, speed and percentage of residual gas.

A Micro-Controller Based Control Unit for Motorcycle Engines to Meet Emission and OBD Requirements

This paper presents an engine management system to control a 4-stroke two-cylinder motorcycle engine. At the heart of the system is a microcontroller based reference design engine control unit. This works together with a crank wheel sensor, throttle position sensor, oxygen sensor, manifold pressure sensor, injectors, ignition coils and fuel pump. This system has the capability to detect engine position, sense throttle position, calculate mass airflow from air temperature, control fuel injection timing and amount, control spark timing and dwell. It has idle control with stepper motor and closed-loop feedback of oxygen levels in the exhaust. To achieve fast closed-loop control, the controller turns on an oxygen heater. Serial communication via KWP2000 is used for reprogramming of the controller and reading diagnostic codes. The main goal of this system is to meet emission requirements and provide OBD capability. Some results on an actual motorcycle will be presented.

A Study of Effects of Design Parameters on Transient Response and Injection Rate Shaping for a Common Rail Injector System

FIRCRI-a flexible injection rate common rail injector was developed. This paper presents the working principle and the configuration of the injector. As key technologies in development of the injector, a new fast response solenoid valve was developed and 4 dimensionless design parameters of hydraulic system were presented by through computer simulation and experimental study. The solenoid valve was deliberately designed so as to eliminate the hydraulic force acting on the valve. Other configuration parameters were also optimized so that the response time of the solenoid valve is 0.3 ms. It is interesting to find that the response time of the injector is not only determined by the solenoid valve, but all parameters of the hydraulic system of the injector. The injector can realize pilot injection, which is less than 2.5mm3, at a controllable phase and multi-injections.

The increasingly stringent requirements in relation to emission reduction and onboard diagnostics are pushing the Chinese automotive industry toward more innovative solutions and a rapid increase in electronic control performance. To manage the system complexity the architecture will require being well structure on hardware and software level. The paper introduces GEMS-K1 (Gasoline Engine Management System - Kit 1). GEMS-K1 is a platform being compliant with Euro IV emission regulation for gasoline engines. The application software is developed using modeling language, the code is automatically generated from the model. The driver software has a well defined structure including microcontroller abstraction layer and ECU abstraction layer. The hardware is following design rules to be robust, 100% testable and easy to manufacture. The electronic components use the latest innovation in terms of architecture and technologies.

An Assessment of the Impact of Exhaust Turbine Redesign, for Narrow VGT Operating Range, on the Performance of Diesel Engines with Assisted Turbocharger

Electrically assisted turbochargers are a promising technology for improving boost response of turbocharged engines. These systems include a turbocharger shaft mounted electric motor/generator. In the assist mode, electrical energy is applied to the turbocharger shaft via the motor function, while in the regenerative mode energy can be extracted from the shaft via the generator function, hence these systems are also referred to as regenerative electrically assisted turbochargers (REAT). REAT allows simultaneous improvement of boost response and fuel economy of boosted engines. This is achieved by optimally scheduling the electrical assist and regeneration actions. REAT also allows the exhaust turbine to operate within a narrow range of optimal vane positions relative to the unassisted variable geometry turbocharger (VGT). The ability to operate within a narrow range of VGT vane positions allows an opportunity for a more optimal turbine design for a REAT system.

An Experimental Study on HCCI Combustion in a Four-Stroke Gasoline Engine with Reduced Valve Lift Operations

To achieve homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion in the range of low speeds and loads, special camshafts with low intake/exhaust cam lift and short intake/exhaust cam duration were designed. The camshafts were mounted in a Ricardo Hydra four-stroke single cylinder port fuel injection gasoline engine. HCCI combustion was achieved by controlling the amount of trapped residuals from previous cycle through negative valve overlap. The results show that indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) depends on valve timings, engine speeds and lambda. Early exhaust valve closing (EVC) timings result in high residual fractions in the cylinder and low air mass sucked into the cylinder. As a result, combustion duration increases, IMEP and peak pressure decrease. However, pumping losses decrease. High engine speed has the similar effect on HCCI combustion characteristics as early EVC timings do. But inlet valve opening timings have slight effect on IMEP compared to EVC timings.

CFD Study on Effects of Thermal and Residual Gas Inhomogeneous Distribution on Auto-ignition of Gasoline HCCI Combustion

For a HCCI gasoline combustion engine controlled by burnt residual gas, management of the residual gas and thermal distribution in cylinder is a possible way to optimize the auto-ignition and combustion phasing. The management ability of intake valve on the distribution and its effects on auto-ignition are investigated via KIVA code. The thermal and composition inhomogeneous distribution is quantified as inhomogeneity. The results show that, the thermal inhomogeneous distribution correlates well with that of the residual gas. As the residual gas fraction increases, the residual gas fraction inhomogeneity and the temperature inhomogeneity tend to increase. The residual gas fraction, as well as the in-cylinder residual gas inhomogeneity and temperature inhomogeneity, increases greatly with earlier exhaust valve close timing. When the residual gas fraction is larger than 40%, late intake valve open timing leads to high in-cylinder inhomogeneity.

Comparison of HCCI Combustion Respectively Fueled with Gasoline, Ethanol and Methanol through the Trapped Residual Gas Strategy

In this paper, HCCI combustion characteristics of three typical high octane number fuels, gasoline, ethanol and methanol, are compared in a Ricardo single cylinder port injection engine with compression ratio of 10.5. In order to trap enough high temperature residual gas to heat intake mixture charge for stable HCCI combustion, camshafts of the experimental engine are replaced by a set of special camshafts with low valve lift and short cam duration. The three fuels are injected into the intake port respectively in different mixture volume percentages, which are E0 (100% gasoline), E50 (50% gasoline, 50% ethanol), E100 (100% ethanol), M50 (50% gasoline, 50% methanol) and M100 (100% methanol). This work concentrates on the combustion and emission characteristics and the available HCCI operation range of these fuels. What's more, the detailed comparison of in-cylinder temperature, ignition timing and other parameters has been carried out.

Continuous Load Adjustment Strategy of a Gasoline HCCI-SI Engine Fully Controlled by Exhaust Gas

Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) technology is promising to reduce engine exhaust emissions and fuel consumption. However, it is still confronted with the problem of its narrow operation range that covers only the light and medium loads. Therefore, to expand the operation range of HCCI, mode switching between HCCI combustion and transition SI combustion is necessary, which may bring additional problems to be resolved, including load fluctuation and increasing the complexity of control strategy, etc. In this paper, a continuously adjustable load strategy is proposed for gasoline engines. With the application of the strategy, engine load can be adjusted continuously by the in-cylinder residual gas fraction in the whole operation range. In this research, hybrid combustion is employed to bridge the gaps between HCCI and traditional SI and thus realize smooth transition between different load points.

Control Strategies for Steady and Transient Operation of a 4-Stroke Gasoline Engine with CAI Combustion Using a 4-Variable Valve Actuating System (4VVAS)

In the last few years, residual gas trapping has been widely used to achieve CAI combustion operation in the four-stroke gasoline engine by means of the negative valve overlap period. In this paper, a flexible mechanical variable valve actuation system based on the production technologies is described. The 4VVAS system is capable of independent control of intake valve lift and its timing, exhaust valve lift and its timing and it has been incorporated in a specially designed cylinder head for a single cylinder research engine. In addition, an engine simulation program has been developed to investigate the potential of the 4VVAS system for CAI engine operation and the switch between CAI and SI operations on the same engine. The engine simulation program is written with Matlab Simulink and incorporates an engine block, a newly developed CAI ignition and heat release model, a valve profile generator, and an engine control module for spark ignition and fuelling control.

Dilution Boundary Expansion Mechanism of SI-CAI Hybrid Combustion Based on Micro Flame Ignition Strategy

In decade years, Spark Ignition-Controlled Auto Ignition (SI-CAI) hybrid combustion, also called Spark Assisted Compression Ignition (SACI) has shown its high-efficiency and low emissions advantages. However, high dilution causes the problem of unstable initial ignition and flame propagation, which leads to high cyclic variation of heat release and IMEP. The instability of SI-CAI hybrid combustion limits its dilution degree and its ability to improve the thermal efficiency. In order to solve instability problems and expand the dilution boundary of hybrid combustion, micro flame ignition (MFI) strategy is applied in gasoline hybrid combustion engines. Small amount of Dimethyl Ether (DME) chosen as the ignition fuel is injected into cylinder to form micro flame kernel, which can stabilize the ignition combustion process.

Disturbance Estimation Based Modeling Technique for Control and Prediction in Controllable Mechanical Turbo-Compounding System

Modeling techniques matter a lot in many fields of engine engineering. Models are requested not only for control design but also for dynamic prediction. However, problems might be encountered during modeling process either because of the system complexity or the unaffordable modeling cost. As a result, a new modeling technique based on disturbance estimation is proposed in this paper. By employing the proposed modeling technique, models are set up in real time with the online information from input and output. The uncertainties of system dynamics are handled as internal disturbance of the system, while the perturbation from outside are taken as the external disturbance, and the combination of the two can be estimated online by a kind of active observer called extended state observer (ESO).

Disturbance Observation and Rejection Method for Gasoline HCCI Combustion Control

Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) is a promising internal combustion engine concept, but suffers from its high sensitivity to operation conditions and disturbances, such as the intake temperature fluctuation, the load fluctuation or the in-cylinder temperature distribution variation. In this paper, a novel control method is proposed for a port-fuel-injected stoichiometric HCCI engine equipped with variable valve actuation (VVA). A first principle model is developed for controller synthesis with intake valve closing (IVC), exhaust valve closing (EVC), and injected fuel quantity as inputs and combustion timing (CA50), Gross IMEP and Lambda as outputs. The proposed method combines the features of model-based feedforward, decoupling, and active disturbance rejection control (ADRC), named MDDC for short, where the easily modeled cross-coupling and disturbances are compensated directly, while all the remaining uncertainties are estimated and mitigated in real time by ADRC.

Effect of Flame Propagation on the Auto-Ignition Timing in SI-CAI Hybrid Combustion (SCHC)

SCHC (SI-CAI hybrid combustion), also known as spark-assisted HCCI, has been proved to be an effective method to stabilize combustion and extend the operation range of high efficiency, low temperature combustion. The combustion is initiated by the spark discharge followed by a propagation of flame front until the auto-ignition of end-gas. Spark ignition and the spark timing can be used to control the combustion event. The goal of this research is to study the effect of flame propagation on the auto-ignition timing in SCHC by means of chemiluminescence imaging and heat release analysis based on an optical engine. With higher EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) rate, more fuel is consumed by the flame propagation and stronger correlation between the flame propagation and auto-ignition is observed.

Effect of Valve Timing and Residual Gas Dilution on Flame Development Characteristics in a Spark Ignition Engine

The goal of this research was to study and quantify the effect of exhaust valve timing and residual gas dilution on in-cylinder flow patterns, flame propagation and heat release characteristics in a spark ignition engine. Experiments were carried out in a recently developed single cylinder optical engine. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was applied to measuring and evaluating the in-cylinder flow field. Detailed analysis of flame images combined with heat release data was presented for several engine operating conditions, giving insight into the combustion process in terms of visible flame area and flame expansion speed. Results from PIV measurement indicates that the limited alteration of the in-cylinder bulk flow could be observed with the variation of exhaust valve timing. The in-cylinder fluctuating kinetic energies and their Coefficient of Variations (COVs) decrease with the advance of the exhaust valve timing.

Effects of Active Species in Residual Gas on Auto-Ignition in a HCCI Gasoline Engine

Chemical reaction kinetics plays an important role in homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion. In order to control the combustion process, the underlying mechanism of auto-ignition must be explored, especially for the HCCI combustion using negative valve overlap (NVO) strategy, in which the residual gas affects the auto-ignition of next cycle remarkably. In this research, experimental research was carried out in a single cylinder gasoline engine equipped with an in-cylinder sampling system which mainly consists of a special spark plug, a sampling tube and a high-speed electromagnetic valve. In-cylinder charge was sampled at compression stroke and analyzed by FTIR with two types of fuel injection strategy, such as port fuel injection (PFI) solely and port fuel injection combined with injection during negative valve overlap (PFI & NVO-Injection).

Effects of Driver Acceleration Behavior on Fuel Consumption of City Buses

Approximately 50% energy is consumed during the acceleration of a city bus. Fuel consumption during acceleration is significantly affected by driving behavior. In this study, 13 characteristic parameters were selected to describe driving style based on analysis of how driving influences fuel consumption during acceleration. The 100,000 km real-world vehicle running data of six drivers on three city buses in a particular bus line in Tianjin, China were sampled using a vehicle-on-line data logger. Based on the selected characteristic parameters and collected driving data, an evaluation model of the fuel consumption level of a driver was established by adopting the method of decision tree C4.5. For two-level classification, the model has over 85% prediction accuracy. The model also has the advantages of having a few training samples and strong generalization. As an example of the model application, the fuel-saving potential of a driver under optimal operations was analyzed.

Efficiency Analysis of the Rankine Cycle System Used for Engine Exhaust Energy Recovery under Driving Cycle

The RCS (Rankine cycle system) used to recover the exhaust gas energy from internal combustion engines has been regarded as one of the most promising ways to achieve higher efficiency. However, it is a big challenge to keep the RCS still in good performance under variable driving cycle. This paper aims at revealing the reasons resulting in the low efficiency under driving cycle, comparing to that under steady-state condition. The dynamic operating process of the RCS under driving cycle is analyzed, and then the RCS applied on an 11.6L heavy duty diesel engine is modeled. Based on that, the dynamic performance of the RCS under an actual driving cycle is discussed. The results indicate that the average efficiency under a piece of Tianjin bus driving cycle is as low as 3.63%, which is less than half of that (7.77%) under the rated point (1300rpm and 50%load). The reasons leading to the low efficiency under driving cycle is interpreted from three aspects.

Enhancement of Near Wall Mixing of an Impinging Jet by Means of a Bump on the Wall

It is found that a thin and rich mixture layer on a wall is formed after impingement of a gas jet of fuel on the wall. The measured thickness of the mixture layer is about 2 mm. and its dispersion rate after the end of injection is much lower, compared to that of a space gas jet. This phenomenon in a small D.I. diesel engine is known as “wall wetting” or “wall fuel accumulation” which has an important influence on engine fuel consumption and emissions. This paper presents a technique for enhancing the near wall mixing of an impinging jet by means of a bump on the wall. The development of a wall jet formed after an impingement of a gas jet has been investigated by simultaneously measuring the near wall velocity and concentration distribution. It has been found that a wall jet is stripped off the wall and ejected as a secondary jet when the wall jet encounters a bump of the wall.

Expanding the Low Load Limit of HCCI Combustion Process Using EIVO Strategy in a 4VVAS Gasoline Engine

Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) technology is promising to reduce engine exhaust emissions and fuel consumption in gasoline engine. However, it is still confronted with the problem of its limited operation range. High load is limited by the tradeoff between the quantity of working charge and dilution charge. Low load is limited by the high residual gas fraction and low temperature in the cylinder. One of the highlights of HCCI combustion research at present is to expand the low load limit of HCCI combustion by developing HCCI idle operation. The main obstacle in developing HCCI idle combustion is too high residual gas fraction and low temperature to misfire in cylinder. This paper relates to a method for achieving the appropriate environment for auto-ignition at idle and the optimal tradeoff between the combustion stability and fuel consumption by employing EIVO valve strategy with an equivalent air-fuel ratio.
