System Architecture Design Suitable for Automated Driving Vehicle: Hardware Configuration and Software Architecture Design

Our L2-automated driving system enabling a driver to take his/her hands off from the steering wheel is self-operating on a highway, allowing the vehicle to automatically change lanes and overtake slow-speed leading vehicles. It includes an OTA function, which can extend the ODD after the market launch. To realize these features in reasonably safer and more reliable ways, system architecture must be designed well under hardware and software implementation constraints. One such major constraint is the system must be designed to make the most out of the existing sensor configuration on the vehicle, where five peripheral radars and a front camera for ADAS as well as panoramic-view and rear-view cameras for monitoring are available. In addition, four LiDARs and a telephoto camera are newly adopted for ADS. Another constraint is the system must consist of reliable redundant components for fail-safe operation.

The World's First Transverse 8-Speed Automatic Transmission

We have developed the world's first 8-speed automatic transmission for transverse FWD/4WD vehicles. The aim of this new automatic transmission was to achieve world-class fuel economy while offering both smooth gear shift and sporty shift feeling suitable for luxury cars. This has been accomplished using wide spread gear ratio, outstanding low drag components and highly efficient hydraulic control system. In addition, we have achieved the compactness similar to current 6-speed automatic transmission by adopting new gear train and compact clutch layout. In this paper, the detail of this automatic transmission is introduced.

Development of Hologram Head-Up Display

Instrument clusters used in automobiles play an important role as man-machine interface. A variety of information about the current driving situation is conveyed to the driver quickly and accurately. A great interest has been taken in the high visibility and legibility of the head-up display (subsequently abbreviated as HUD). Originally developed as display used in aeronautical applications, we have tried to exploit ways to adapt this device for automotive use. We have succeeded to produce a new HUD system, which has the following design features; (1) High brightness and high contrast display device using a liquid crystal display (subsequently abbreviated as LCD) and a halogen lamp illumination. (2) Long focus display in two colors using holographic lens. (3) Automatic dimming control system using an illuminance sensor. (see Fig. 1)

The latest engine development trends have blended the consumers demands for high performance and horsepower output with Governmental regulations for fuel efficiency and emission reductions. As a result of this, it has become increasingly common to use a four valve per cylinder design. One application in particular is a four-stroke cycle engine for motorcycles. In order to incorporate all of these elements into one design, space constraints being considered, spark plugs of a reduced size were developed. To this end, compact spark plugs attain the following advantages over the conventionally sized plugs: 1) Improved volumetric efficiency due to an increase in valve diameters and a reduction in valve arrangement angles. 2) Improved rigidity of the material in the area between the threaded plug hole and the valve seat.
