Two Prototype Engines with Colliding and Compression of Pulsed Supermulti-Jets through a Focusing Process, Leading to Nearly Complete Air Insulation and Relatively Silent High Compression for Automobiles, Motorcycles, Aircrafts, and Rockets

We have proposed the engine featuring a new compressive combustion principle based on pulsed supermulti-jets colliding through a focusing process in which the jets are injected from the chamber walls to the chamber center. This principle has the potential for achieving relatively silent high compression around the chamber center because autoignition occurs far from the chamber walls and also for stabilizing ignition due to this plug-less approach without heat loss on mechanical plugs including compulsory plasma ignition systems. Then, burned high temperature gas is encased by nearly complete air insulation, because the compressive flow shrinking in focusing process gets over expansion flow generated by combustion.

Experimental Study of Spark-Assisted Auto-Ignition Gasoline Engine with Octagonal Colliding Pulsed Supermulti-Jets and Asymmetric Double Piston Unit

Much effort has been devoted to studies on auto-ignition engines of gasoline including homogeneous-charge combustion ignition engines over 30 years, which will lead to lower exhaust energy loss due to high-compression ratio and less dissipation loss due to throttle-less device. However, the big problem underlying gasoline auto-ignition is knocking phenomenon leading to strong noise and vibration. In order to overcome this problem, we propose the principle of colliding pulsed supermulti-jets. In a prototype engine developed by us, octagonal pulsed supermulti-jets collide and compress the air around the center point of combustion chamber, which leads to a hot spot area far from chamber walls. After generating the hot spot area, the mechanical compression of an asymmetric double piston unit is added in four-stroke operation, which brings auto-ignition of gasoline.

Development of Hologram Head-Up Display

Instrument clusters used in automobiles play an important role as man-machine interface. A variety of information about the current driving situation is conveyed to the driver quickly and accurately. A great interest has been taken in the high visibility and legibility of the head-up display (subsequently abbreviated as HUD). Originally developed as display used in aeronautical applications, we have tried to exploit ways to adapt this device for automotive use. We have succeeded to produce a new HUD system, which has the following design features; (1) High brightness and high contrast display device using a liquid crystal display (subsequently abbreviated as LCD) and a halogen lamp illumination. (2) Long focus display in two colors using holographic lens. (3) Automatic dimming control system using an illuminance sensor. (see Fig. 1)

New Lighting System for Electronic Analog Clusters

The development of a high tech image analog cluster providing good readability is required by today's customer. To satisfy this trend, we have developed a highly unique analog cluster, which features very sharp white lit pointers with evenly illuminated white dials on a black acrylic face. These features are primarily achieved through two new lighting sources: 1. Pointers made from thin, lightweight Cold Cathode Discharge Tubes. This pointer creates very high brightness, regardless of temperature, by enclosing xenon gas in the tube, and was designed into a single side electrode structure. 2. Circular shape Cold Cathode Tube Installed Behind Each Dial Applique. This application creates very bright high quality illumination. In this session, we would like to introduce the construction and system of two new lighting sources for lexus, LS400. This technology provide improved readability.

Besides automobile instrument clusters requiring the high precision and legibility, they must also appeal to the user's fashionable sense. We have been proud of introducing such the cluster, named New Electronic Analogue Meter for the LEXUS LS 400 high quality luxury sedan. This paper describes design features of it as the followings; (1) The acrylic lens with black out effect. (2) Utilizing the cold cathode discharge tubes for pointer and back light of dial applique. (3) The virtual image warning indicators producted on the dial applique of the speedometer or tachometer.
