The fundamental differences between conventional crank and connecting rod internal combustion engines and the CMC Scotch Yoke family of engines are described in some detail. The advantages of the CMC design are also described and explanations given for the real and potential gains when installed in a motor vehicle. Some detail is also given of the development history and the solutions to some of the problems encountered.
