From January 1st 1996, European Union law requires that all products placed on the market, containing electrical and/or electronic components, must satisfy the EMC requirements of Directive 89/336/EEC. Failure to comply may result in the withdrawal and prohibition of that product from the market. The Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA), a Competent Body for 89/336/EEC certification, has developed an EMC test strategy for off highway vehicles intended for the European market. This paper describes the background to the new legislation and the routes to compliance. Details of the strategy are presented, along with a case study report, describing the progress through it, of one manufacturer, J C Bamford Excavators Ltd (JCB).
