Experimental investigation on a CNG operated Stratified Scavenged Two Stroke SI engine using Embedded systems

2004-01-16
2004-28-0007
The most serious drawback of the conventional two-stroke SI engine is its high exhaust emissions and low thermal efficiency due to short-circuiting of air/fuel mixture to the exhaust port. To minimize the short-circuiting losses, stratified scavenging technology has been developed. Electronic CNG injection was developed for better fuel economy and reduced emissions. Tests were conducted in two phases; first phase, the carburetor was replaced by the manifold injection and second phase stratified scavenging with manifold injection was developed to improve the performance and reduction of exhaust emissions. The engine performance, emissions, and combustion characteristics of the above system at constant speed were analyzed.

Experimental investigations have been carried out using bio diesel as an alternative fuel in single cylinder, compression ignition engine under varying operating conditions. In this work various parameters such as brake power, peak pressure rise, and emissions during combustion process under varying operating conditions with diesel, bio diesel, blends of bio diesel were studied. Neat vegetable oils pose some problems when subjected to prolonged usage in CI engine. These problems are attributed to high viscosity, low volatility and polyunsaturated character of the neat vegetable oils. These problems are reduced to minimum by subjecting the vegetable oils to the process of transesterification. A series of engine test provided adequate and relevant information that the biodiesel can be used as an alternative and environmental friendly fuel in existing diesel engines without any modification in the engine hardware.
