New Standard for Four-stroke Diesel Engine Oils: JASO DH-1

This paper reviews the development of a new standard for four-stroke diesel engine oils, JASO DH-1 (JASO M355: 2000). This standard was introduced to the market on April 1, 2001. It prescribes the minimum performance for engine oils conforming to four-stroke diesel engines manufactured by Japanese OEMs. This standard is composed of four engine tests and seven bench tests. The engine tests include a piston detergency test (JASO M336: 1998), valve train wear test (JASO M354: 1999), soot dispersancy test (ASTM D 5967-99) and high temperature antioxidation test (ASTM D 5533-97a). The piston detergency test and the valve train wear test were developed in Japan. The bench tests measure hot surface deposits, anti-forming, volatility, anti-corrosion, shear-stability, total base number, and seal compatibility.

Anti-Shudder Property of Automatic Transmission Fluids - A Study by the International Lubricants Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) ATF Subcommittee

In recent years, the slip lock-up mechanism has been adopted widely, because of its fuel efficiency and its ability to improve NVH. This necessitates that the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) used in automatic transmissions with slip lock-up clutches requires anti-shudder performance characteristics. The test methods used to evaluate the anti-shudder performance of an ATF can be classified roughly into two types. One is specified to measure whether a μ-V slope of the ATF is positive or negative, the other is the evaluation of the shudder occurrence in the practical vehicle. The former are μ-V property tests from MERCON® V, ATF+4®, and JASO M349-98, the latter is the vehicle test from DEXRON®-III. Additionally, in the evaluation of the μ-V property, there are two tests using the modified SAE No.2 friction machine and the modified low velocity friction apparatus (LVFA).

Anti-Shudder Mechanism of ATF Additives at Slip-Controlled Lock-Up Clutch

The anti-shudder effect of ATF additives and their mechanisms have been investigated. Anti-shudder durability was evaluated using an automatic transmission (AT) on an engine stand under continuously slip-controlled condition. The addition of over-based Ca-sulfonate and friction modifier (FM) remarkably improved the anti-shudder durability of ATF. The surface roughness of the contact area (contact area roughness) of the clutch plates was measured by an electron probe surface roughness analyzer. To evaluate the boundary frictional properties of the adsorbed film formed, the friction coefficient of the clutch plates in the absence of oil was examined after the anti-shudder durability test. It was found that shudder occurrence was strongly correlated with the contact area roughness and the boundary frictional property of the steel plate surface. Large contact area roughness and low boundary friction were preferred to prevent shudder.

Shear Stability of Automatic Transmission Fluids -- Methods and Analysis A Study by the International Lubricants Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) ATF Subcommittee

This paper discusses four methods for measuring the resistance of transmission fluids to permanent viscosity loss through shear. The four methods include the Fuel Injector Shear Stability test, the Sonic shear test, the DEXRON®-III Cycling test and the KRL test. Each of these methods and their advantages are discussed and data provided for many OEM fluids and the effects of these methods on the final viscosity. The data indicates the KRL generates the maximum shear stress on the fluids compared to the other methods. The data also indicates the sonic shear method results are similar to those of the KRL test. The fuel injector test imparts the least stress to the fluid. Data is presented to show the correlation between viscosity changes obtained using these methods and viscosity changes observed with mileage accumulation in vehicle transmissions.

As part of the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee's (ILSAC) goal of developing a global automatic transmission fluid (ATF) specification, members have been evaluating test methods that are currently used by various automotive manufacturers for qualifying ATF for use in their respective transmissions. This report deals with comparing test methods used for determining torque capacity in friction systems (shifting clutches). Three test methods were compared, the Plate Friction Test from the General Motors DEXRON®-III Specification, the Friction Durability Test from the Ford MERCON® Specification, and the Japanese Automotive Manufacturers Association Friction Test - JASO Method 348-95. Eight different fluids were evaluated. Friction parameters used in the comparison were breakaway friction, dynamic friction torque at midpoint and the end of engagement, and the ratio of end torque to midpoint torque.

The Development of Fluid for Small-Sized and Light Weight Viscous Coupling

For viscous couplings(VCs) as a driving force transmission system of vehicles, requirement of torque characteristics has been getting very stringent. Because the torque characteristics significantly affect four wheel drive vehicles' abilities such as traction performance and driving stability. Furthermore, the recent concerns on high fuel economy, low pollution and low cost require that design of VCs should be increasingly compact, light weighted and excellent in transmitted torque's stability. It is an easy way to increase viscosity of viscous coupling fluids(VCFs) for the compact design of the VC. But it might cause increase in heat load and wear of plates which resulted in degradation of the VCF. The degradation affects VCF's viscosity and impairs stability in torque transmission. Therefore it is indispensable to develop high viscosity VCF which is excellent in long-term viscosity's stability.

Next Generation High Performance ATF for Slip-Controlled Automatic Transmission

A slip-controlled lock-up clutch system Is very efficient in improving the fuel economy of automatic transmission (AT) equipped vehicles. However, a special automatic transmission fluid (ATF) which combines an anti-shudder property with high torque capacity is required for this system. In this study, we established additive technology for ATF having a sufficient anti-shudder property and high torque capacity. Based on the technology, new ATF: ATF-T4 was developed. It was confirmed in actual AT tests that ATF-T4 has excellent anti-shudder durability and high torque capacity. Furthermore, ATF-T4 has good SAE No. 2 friction characteristics, oxidation stability, compatibility with materials (elastomers, nylons, etc.) and viscosity at low temperatures.

Development of Automatic Transmission Fluid for Slip-Controlled Lock-Up Clutch Systems

Slip-controlled lock-up clutch systems are very efficient and greatly improve fuel economy. On the other hand, these systems can cause unstable vibrations including those known as “shudder vibrations”. In this study, the authors made a theoretical analysis of these unstable vibrations to clarify the fundamental frictional properties of automatic transmission fluids (ATFs) required for slip-controlled lock-up clutch systems. Based on this analysis, we established lubricant technology having a sufficient anti-shudder property and high torque capacity. Further, we developed a new test apparatus to evaluate the anti-shudder durability for lubricant development.

Lubricant Technology to Enhance the Durability of Low Friction Performance of Gasoline Engine Oils

This paper describes lubricant technology to enhance the durability of the low friction performance of gasoline engine oils which were formulated with molybdenum dithiodicarbamates (MoDTCs) as friction modifiers. This paper also describes an evaluation method which consists of three tests: (1) Our in-house rig test to simulate oil deterioration in an engine stand; (2) Quantitative analysis of MoDTC and ZnDTP in oils and; (3) A friction test (SRV). It was found that the low friction performance of fuel economy engine oils deteriorated primarily due to the consumption of MoDTC and ZnDTP. Calcium salicylates had better durability of low friction performance than calcium sulfonates. Furthermore, sulfurized compounds enhanced the durability. Based on these findings, an experimental oil was formulated.

Investigation on Oxidation Stability of Engine Oils Using Laboratory Scale Simulator

The purposes of this paper are to develop a new laboratory oxidation stability testing method and to clarify factors relative to the viscosity increase of engine oil. Polymerized products, obtained from the oil after a JASO M333-93 engine test, were found to consist mainly of carboxyl, nitrate and nitro compounds and to increase the oil viscosity. A good similarity between the JASO M333-93 test and the laboratory simulation test was found for the polymerized products. The products were obtained not by heating oil only in air but by heating oil while supplying a synthetic blowby gas consisting of fuel pyrolysis products, NO, SO2 and air. The laboratory test has also revealed that the viscosity increase depends on oil quality, organic Fe content and hydrocarbon composition in the fuel. Moreover, it has been found that blowby gas and organic Fe accelerate ZnDTP consumption and that aromatics concentration in the fuel correlates with the viscosity increase of oil.

Engine Testing Comparison of the Relative Oxidation Stability Performance of Two Engine Oils

The relative oxidation stability of two fully formulated engine oils was compared in three testing methods by following the increase in kinematic viscosity of the oil. The purpose of the study was to determine the cause of the completely opposite ranking of the oxidation stability of the two oils that was observed in the ASTM Sequence IIIE engine test and the JASO M333 93 engine test and to determine the degree of correlation the two engine tests had with the field. The study consisted of laboratory oxidation testing, engine testing and taxi field testing to cover the range of conditions from controlled oxidation to actual driving conditions.

Engine Oil Additive Effects on Deactivation of Monolithic Three-Way Catalysts and Oxygen Sensors

It is widely known that pellet-typed catalysts are deactivated by phosphorus (ZnDTP) that comes from engine oils. In this paper, the poisoning of monolithic three-way catalysts and oxygen sensors by engine oils is studied. First, catalysts and oxygen sensors were poisoned on the engine bench by test oils in which the quantity of phosphorus and ash was varied. Next, performance of the catalysts and sensors alone was examined and the vehicle exhaust emission at FTP mode was measured on a chassis dynamometer. The results indicate that phosphorus in engine oils poisons the monolithic catalyst and the oxygen sensor resulting in deterioration of the vehicle NOx exhaust emission. However, Ca sulfonate and Mg sulfonate detergents act by restraining phosphorus poisoning of the catalyst and the oxygen sensor. Through analysis of the catalyst and sensor surfaces, it is concluded that phosphorus poisons the catalyst and sensor forming a dense coating.

Effect of Gasoline Engine Oil Components on Intake Valve Deposit

This paper describes lubricant technology which helps to prevent intake valve deposit (IVD) formation for use with conventional gasolines without detergents, as well as the IVD evaluation method used in testing. The FED 3462 method was modified to establish a new panel coking test method, with excellent correlation with the engine stand IVD test, for the quantitative evaluation of IVD. Tests have shown that IVD increases when the volatility of base oils becomes higher due to condensation and polymerization of engine oil additives. Furthermore, viscosity index improvers, metallic detergents and ashless dispersants have considerable effect on IVD formation. Based on various experiments, the authors have established a formulation technology for engine oils to lower IVD, which they incorporated in two newly formulated SG oils with lower IVD than conventional 5W-30 SG oil.

Fuel Economy Performance of the Highly Efficient Fuel Economy Oils Using Chassis Dynamometer Test

Fuel economy is one of the most important performance features for modern engine oils. For some time now, fuel efficient engine oils (called Energy Conserving II or EC-II) have been available in the marketplace. However, the performance of EC-II oils is only 2.7% Equivalent Fuel Economy Improvement (EFEI) as measured by the ASTM Sequence VI Engine Test. To meet future industry needs, more fuel efficient engine oils are desirable. In order to achieve this, a study of highly fuel efficient engine oils was initiated. An initial target of 3.9% EFEI was selected and several candidate oils were evaluated, some of which exceeded this target. The oils were evaluated using a chassis dynamometer using the U. S. EPA mode. The test results may be summarized: 5W-30 Prototype Oil containing MoDTC showed between 1.6 and 2.6% better fuel economy than conventional 5W-30 and 10W-30 EC-II oils. There was an optimum viscosity for maximum fuel economy using the EPA testing mode.

LCD Instrument Panel Design for Good Legibility

Means of improving LCD instrument panel legibility, and several important factors which must be taken into consideration to achieve this, are described. Legibility is thoroughly investigated by means of a refined contrast ratio relation. The relationship between the background brightness and the display brightness required to allow the viewer to recognize the symbols displayed was obtained experimentally in order to determine the optimum contrast ratio for the display. For designing an LCD instrument panel with improved legibility, the following factors must be taken into account: making the contrast ratio nearly constant beyond a certain level, avoiding undesirable surface reflection from the display, and insuring a minimum brightness level.
