DNC/CNC Riveting Cells Applied in the International Aircraft Industry

1992-10-01
922407
During the past decade, the number of implemented DNC/CNC Riveting and Assembly Systems has substantially increased and new applications have been introduced into areas where only manual or semi-automatic assembly was once considered. The main reason for developing these systems was the increasing demand for a better level of quality and higher production rates. This paper describes new upper tooling conceived as modular building blocks used on C-frame riveting machines. In addition, applications of C-frame riveting machines for the automatic assembly of pressure bulkheads and freight room-/passenger doors are discussed. Other applications described include the automatic floor grid assembly of large commercial aircraft.

Precision Rotary Swaging of Tubular Automotive Components - New Applications, Manufactured on Automatic Transfer Lines

1992-02-01
920786
Precision Rotary Swaging is a cost effective, material and weight saving forming process for reducing cross sections at rods, tubes and similar blanks consisting of nearly any metal that is suited for cold forming. Sequential to the description of the functional concept, advantages and principal working methods of the Rotary Swaging process, this paper describes many different manufacturing applications in the automotive industry. The manufacture of swaged tubular automotive components, such as drive shafts, shock absorber pistons, seat recliner adjustment and head rest parts, electric motor-, alternator- and starter shafts etc. are included, as well as the currently largest Precision Rotary Swaging Transfer Line producing finished passenger car steering columns.

Precision Rotary Swaging Transfer Lines for the Automatic Production of Tubular Automotive Components

1990-02-01
900296
This paper describes the rotary swaging method to manufacture tubular automotive components, such as steering columns, hollow piston rods for shock absorbers, driving shafts, etc. Linear transfer machines include secondary operations; e.g., turning, thread forming, splining and other operations are included in the automatic production cycle. Forming of automotive steel tubing with circular or non-circular cross sections, mandrel swaging, dimensional tolerances and surface finish are discussed.
