The Ethanol Vehicle Challenge is intended to develop ethanol as a dedicated alternative fuel source that is competitive with gasoline. In doing this, a vehicle will be produced that passes low emissions standards, driveability, performance, and fuel economy tests and is appealing to the average driver. The Cedarville Ethanol Vehicle Challenge Team felt that innovative design and extensive testing were necessary to meet the goals set forth by the competition. The team performed 322 km (200 miles) of testing on the dynamometer and 8369 km (5200 miles) on the road to determine how changes in vehicle systems and components affected the emissions and overall performance of the vehicle. A conservative, disciplined design process resulted in a balanced vehicle which achieved low emissions levels without compromising power.
