The flange interfaces of composite intake manifolds can be successfully sealed using homogeneous press-in-place gaskets, but it is essential for a smooth program launch that a team approach is used. Press-in-place gaskets provide: Accommodation for the variation inherent in large composite moldings Effective sealing under a broad range of conditions An economical sealing system The ability for the OEM to receive a manifold preassembled with gaskets Figure 1 shows a typical arrangement of such a gasket. The following list outlines the topics covered in this paper: 1. Introduction 2. Intake manifold sealing requirements 3. Challenges unique to composite manifolds 4. Press-in-place gaskets 5. Material selection 6. Design verification 7. EGR tube sealing
