Child Injuries & Fatalities - Who is Behind the Wheel?

Recent crash data was used to evaluate the safety performance of drivers who transport children. The age difference between drivers and children was found to be an important predictor of crash-related driving behavior and choices. Also, certain driver behaviors and choices when transporting children were identified as creating elevated risk. This study provides information that parents might use to reduce risk when their children are riding with other drivers. The results may also be of interest to professionals concerned with graduated licensing and the establishment and enforcement of laws relating to child endangerment such as drinking and driving with child passengers.

Offset Frontal Collisions: A Review of the Literature and Analysis of UMTRI and NASS Crash Injury Data - CDC, AIS and Body Area Injuries

Using the CDC (SAE J224), a comparison of the NASS data and the UMTRI field accident files (UM series) indicates a similar distribution of offset frontal crashes. Offset frontal damage occurs in 56-61% of crashes, often involving more than one third of the front of the car. Lap-shoulder belted drivers sustain more AIS 2 or greater injuries when there is interior intrusion and occur more often when the offset damage is in front of the driver. However, this may well be due to the severity of the crash. European studies have no uniformity as to offset frontal collision descriptors are difficult to interpret, or to compare one to another.

The Relationship Between Delta V and Injury

This paper has utilized a specially created subset of the data contained within the National Accident Sampling Study (NASS) for an updated and expanded analysis of the relationship between Delta V and injury. The data presented embrace over 20,000 accidents of passenger cars, light trucks and utility vehicles involved in accidents between 1980 and 1991. These unique accidents have been extracted from the massive amount of available information contained within the NASS data in order that the variables which have the greatest information content for our subject can be studied and analyzed. Some of the variables which were extracted and studied include Delta V, Principle Direction of Force, restraint system type and use, injuries, vehicle weight and type as well as the occupant variables of age and sex which are believed to influence human tolerance to injury.

Analysis of Passenger Car Side Impacts - Crash Location, Injuries, AIS and Contacts

NASS 80-88 passenger side impacts data were analyzed. Location of primary car damage using the CDC classification, the AIS for injury severity studies, and the interior contacts of the various body areas. Drivers alone, or with passengers were studied separately in both left and right side crashes. Direct impacts to the passenger compartment only are less frequent than to other CDC side zones. Driver interior contacts vary by body region but also by side impacted in the crash. The presence of an unrestrained front passenger appears to enhance driver injury level in left side crashes but the presence of a passenger, in right side crashes appears to moderate driver injury severity.

Lower Extremity Injuries in Frontal Crashes: Injuries, Locations, AIS and Contacts

Frontal crashes (11-1 o'clock) were reviewed from the National Accident Severity Study file (NASS) for years 1980-87. Adult drivers and front right passengers, with lower extremity injuries of the pelvis, thigh, knee, leg or ankle/foot were reviewed. Analysis of age differences, injury contacts, and effectiveness of the 3-point restraint system were studied. Unrestrained drivers have a higher frequency of knee injuries than passengers, fewer leg injuries than passengers and both have the same frequency of ankle/foot injuries. Older unbelted drivers have more injuries to the pelvis, leg, and ankle/foot region than do young drivers. Passengers have more leg injuries. The instrument panel is the major contact for most of the lower extremity injuries. Lap/shoulder belts significantly reduce lower extremity injury frequency.

The Influence of the Seat Belt Tension Reliever Feature on Seat Belt Usage and Injury Severity

In an effort to encourage greater usage of the newly introduced integral lap and shoulder belt for outboard front seat occupants during the 1970's, a tension reliever device was designed into the shoulder belt retractor. The purpose of the tension reliever was to reduce the pressure on the shoulder and upper torso of the seat belt wearer caused by the retractor pulling on the belt webbing. The relative merit of this device has been questioned, but never resolved. A study of Chrysler built cars involved in frontal impact accidents was made to compare the frequency of seat belt usage and the relative injury severity in comparable size passenger cars before and after the introduction of the tension reliever. The result of this study shows (1) an increase in seat belt use in the cars equipped with a tension reliever during a time when seat belt use in all cars was relatively unchanged, and (2) the relative injury to belt wearers was less severe in cars equipped with the tension reliever.
