The Focus Electric is Ford�s first full-featured 5 passenger battery electric vehicle. The engineering team set our sights on achieving best-in-class function and efficiency and was successful with an EPA certified 1XX MPGe and range XXX then the facing competition allowing for a slightly lower capacity battery pack and larger vehicle without customer trade-off. We briefly overview the engineering method and technologies employed to deliver the results as well as sharing some of the functional challenges unique to this type of vehicle. Ford: Driving Hybrid Efficiency

Hybrid vehicles in the modern era were developed with a strong primary goal to increase fuel efficiency in the North American market. Over the last 15 years, this market has expanded from zero sales to as high as 3% of total US sales. Most recently, the portfolio of competitive offerings with HEV propulsion systems has grown even more to about 30 models on sale today. Some interesting features and attributes have evolved thru this wider array of products giving the customer much more choice of which characteristics to select to match their needs. Ford�s 3rd generation HEV system will be offered for sale this fall. With it, we have continued our focus on the Fuel Efficiency as the driving force for our efforts. The overall process for the system engineering and some of the relevant subsystem and component contributors to the Fuel Efficiency improvement reflected in the 2013 Model Year Fusion and CMAX Hybrids will be presented. Energy Management Options for an Electric Vehicle with Hydraulic Regeneration System

Energy security and climate change challenges provide a strong impetus for investigating Electric Vehicle (EV) concepts. EVs link two major infrastructures, the transportation and the electric power grid. This provides a chance to bring other sources of energy into transportation, displace petroleum and, with the right mix of power generation sources, reduce CO₂ emissions. The main obstacles for introducing a large numbers of EVs are cost, battery weight, and vehicle range. Battery health is also a factor, both directly and indirectly, by introducing limits on depth of discharge. This paper considers a low-cost path for extending the range of a small urban EV by integrating a parallel hydraulic system for harvesting and reusing braking energy. The idea behind the concept is to avoid replacement of lead-acid or small Li-Ion batteries with a very expensive Li-Ion pack, and instead use a low-cost hydraulic system to achieve comparable range improvements.

A Demonstration of Simultaneous Infrared and Visible Imaging Techniques with Pressure Data in an Optically Accessible Diesel Engine Operating at Part Load with High EGR

This work presents a method for simultaneously capturing visible and infrared images along with pressure data in an optical Diesel engine based on the International 4.5L VT275 engine. This paper seeks to illustrate the merits of each imaging technique for visualizing both in-cylinder fuel spray and combustion. The engine was operated under a part load, high simulated exhaust gas recirculation operating condition. Experiments examining fuel spray were conducted in nitrogen. Overlays of simultaneously acquired infrared and visible images are presented to illustrate the differences in imaging between the two techniques. It is seen that the infrared images spatially describe the fuel spray, especially fuel vapors, and the fuel mixing process better than the high-speed visible images.

Design, Development and Testing of Multi-Cylinder Hydraulic Free-Piston Engines

A hydraulic free-piston engine (FPE), which converts combustion energy directly to hydraulic energy, is being developed by the U. S. EPA due to its potential as a lower-cost and higher-efficiency prime mover for hydraulic series hybrid vehicles. Two prototype engines were designed, fabricated and tested: a two-cylinder engine operating primarily with a two-stroke compression-ignition, direct-injection (CIDI) cycle and a six-cylinder engine operating with a four-stroke CIDI cycle. These engines successfully achieved up to 39% peak hydraulic efficiency under continuously fired operation, while demonstrating exceptional repeatability and control of the cylinder compression ratio. A basic description of the engine design, along with the initial test results from these two prototypes, is presented below.
