Dynamic Behavior of a Driveline with Universal Joints

1991-11-01
912491
Nowadays universal joint drive(UJD) is an essential part in a machine to transmit the rotational motion, although it can be also used to transmit the intermittent drives. But only a uniform rotational motion on the average will be concerned in this paper. For the particular kinematics condition of a universal joint(UJ), torsional and bending vibrations are produced excessively in an elastic driveline incorporating UJ, in addition to those by the external or the process conditioned excitations due to the oscillating driving or load torque. Damages in a driveline component or excessive dynamic forces or disturbances can be caused in driveline system as a consequence. In case that defects are not directly developed, the annoying noise of high frequencies is eventually accompanied. This paper presents the analysis of exciting mechanisms of vibration in a driveline and some results from the recent research works.

Optimization Strategy for Design of a Torsional Vibration Absorber

1989-11-01

In practice, a torsional vibration absorber (TVA) is attached to the reciprocating engines to reduce torsional vibration stresses in resonances. A TVA comprises a rotating mass and a torsional spring, thereby generating a trough on the curve of amplitude of steady-state response and especially an absorbing point through the exact tuning the natural frequency of a TVA to the exciting frequency. In technical realization of a TVA at design stage, however, damping is always present somewhat or less in elastic material like rubber, so that the design of a linear TVA turns into a problem of optimization of the TVA-parameters in the operating frequencies. The use of practical objective functions and constraints which utilize the concepts and results of recent research, regarding one dimensional heat conduction in rubber, lead to a more careful consideration of the parameter values. A design procedure is presented from the results based on the numerical analysis.
