A Novel Charger/Discharger for the Parallel Connected Battery Module System

2000-10-31
2000-01-3602
A novel integrated battery charger/discharger converter for a standardized battery module is proposed. Instead of using separate charger and discharger converters, it integrates these two converters into a single converter in order to minimize the size. The integrated charger/discharger converter not only regulates the solar array output power including the peak power tracking capability but also controls the battery charging/discharging current depending on the solar array output power and the load power. In addition, it offers a regulated bus voltage that simplifies the power distribution/conversion for the payload.

Design and Test Hardware for a Solar Array Switching Unit

1992-08-03

This paper describes the control of a pulse width modulated (PWM) type sequential shunt switching unit (SSU) for spacecraft applications. It is found that the solar cell output capacitance has a significant impact on SSU design. Shorting of this cell capacitance by the PWM switch causes input current surges. These surges are minimized by the use of a series filter inductor. The system with a filter is analyzed for ripple and the control to output-voltage transfer function. Stable closed loop design considerations are discussed. The results are supported by modeling and measurements of loop gain and of closed-loop bus impedance on test hardware for NASA's 120 V Earth Observation System (EOS). The analysis and modeling are also applicable to NASA's 160 V Space Station power system.

Exact Simulation of Conducted EMI in Switched Mode Power Supplies

1999-01-2598
Exact simulation of conducted EMI in switched mode power supplies is proposed. In order to achieve exact simulations, PSPICE active component ABM model and modified transformer model are proposed. Each model parameter is extracted from measurements and data-books. PSPICE simulation results with high frequency PCB pattern model are accordant with EMI measurements for a 50[W] isolated flyback converter. EMI relations of each component and EMI patterns are analyzed.

Inductor Current Sensing Peak-Power-Tracking Solar Array Regulator

1999-01-2444
The peak-power-tracking solar array regulator sensing the inductor current is proposed. Since it uses the inductor current as the solar array output power information, the PPT control scheme can be greatly simplified. The charge controlled two-loop scheme is presented to improve the dynamics due to the interaction between the inductor current and the PPT loop. The comparison between the single-voltage loop controlled system and the two-loop controlled system employing the charge control is presented.

Input Series-Output Parallel Connected Converter for High Voltage Power Conversion Applications Employing Charge Control

1999-08-02
1999-01-2599
In this paper, the charge control with the input voltage feed forward is proposed for the input series-output parallel connected converter configuration for high-voltage power conversion applications. This control scheme accomplishes the output current sharing for the output-parallel connected modules as well as the input voltage sharing for the input-series connected modules for all operating conditions including the transients. It also offers the robustness for the input voltage sharing control according to the component value mismatches among the modules.
