Simulation Based Design and Development of Test Track for ADAS Functions Validation and Verification with Respect to Indian Scenario

Autonomous vehicles perform various functions with their own control strategies. Functions like Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keeping system (LKS) and Forward Collision Warning System (FCWS) requires special test tracks for their verification and validation. These test track requirements change with region to region according to available infrastructure. This paper deals with the design and development of test tracks for different ADAS functions verification and validation of Indian specific scenarios and its simulation in IPG CarMaker. The test track conceptualization has been done through the understanding and study of different international standards and geometry of test tracks for Indian conditions have been developed. IPG CarMaker software tool is used for creation of test track, and same track is used for simulation of above ADAS functions in IPG CarMaker.

Improving Calibration Quality by Virtual Testing Approach for BS VI Emission Norms

BS-VI or equivalent development calls for tremendous efforts in concept investigation and calibration for engine out, after treatment, diagnostic checks, off-cycle emissions, field performance, component safety etc. Achieving calibration quality for all these tasks is very challenging considering development time and cost with conventional physical testing approach. Present article focuses on assessment of testing and calibration using virtual approach. To prove and validate this approach, a six-cylinder heavy duty diesel engine is selected and configured in HiL environment. The engine plant model is built offline and validated with base engine data at steady state and transient operations and RT model is integrated with ECU hardware. Data for plant model corrections is generated with short measurement campaign. Refined real time plant model is prepared for evaluating different calibration strategies on virtual test bed environment.

Electromagnetic and Structural Analysis of Synchronous Reluctance Motors for Electric Vehicle Applications

With Increasing environmental concerns and high fuel prices, the automotive industry is shifting its focus to electric vehicles (EVs). Electric motor being the heart of an electric vehicle, faces a major design challenge to have optimum performance and structural strength at an affordable cost. Synchronous reluctance motor offers higher power density at low cost since the rotor is free from rare earth permanent magnets or field excitation. However, torque fluctuations and resulting vibrations are a major concern. This is amended by optimizing the end-barrier width and end-barrier orientation angle in the rotor so as to maximize the torque and minimize the ripple. Simulations are also performed with ferrite magnets assistance to achieve an enhanced torque output. In each case, a structural analysis is done to verify the mechanical strength and rotor deformation considering structural and electromagnetic forces. The analyses are performed using finite element simulations.

The Steering system is one of the most safety critical systems in an automobile. With time the durability, reliability and the fine-tuning of the parameters involved in this subsystem have increased along with the competitiveness of the market. In a competitive market, accelerated testing is the key to shorter development cycles. It is observed that the majority of component manufacturers have a preference on vehicle level testing to achieve their development goals. The vehicle level trials are time consuming and lack the control and repeat-ability of a laboratory environment. This paper describes the development of a steering test rig designed to simulate the disturbances experienced on road within a controlled laboratory environment. The five axis steering rig would allow simulation of individual road wheel displacement along with steering wheel angle input and lateral steering rack displacements. The rig also is designed to be adaptable to a range of vehicle categories.

Full Matrix OBD Verification and Validation of EMS using Hardware in Loop Simulation

On-board diagnostics (OBD) is a term referring to a vehicle's self-diagnostic and reporting capability. It is a system originally designed to reduce emissions by monitoring the performance of major emission related components. There are two kinds of on-board diagnostic systems: OBD-I and OBD-II. In India OBD I was implemented from April 2010 for BS IV vehicles. OBD II was implemented from April 2013 for BS IV vehicles. Apart from the comprehensive component monitors, OBD II system also has noncontinuous monitors like Catalyst monitoring, Lambda monitoring, and other after treatment system monitors. For OBD II verification and Validation, it is required to test all the sensors and actuators that are present in the engine, for all possible failures. From an emissions point of view there are lists of critical failures that are caused due to malfunction of sensors and actuators. Carrying out the full matrix failure testing on the running engine could be tedious, unsafe and time consuming.

Development of Antilock Braking System (ABS) Controller Using Model Based Development (MBD) from Concept to Vehicle Trials

The electronic content in an automobile is ever increasing for last several years due to emissions, safety and performance requirements. The complete development cycle of an electronic controller needs to be compressed to introduce new vehicle models in the market ahead of time. Antilock Braking System (ABS) ECU is one such example which has become a standard feature for most of the vehicles due to safety considerations. A project was undertaken to develop ABS ECU strategy from concept to vehicle trials with Model Based Development (MBD) technique. A methodology is established for scalable, fault tolerant, proven, and quick to implement ECU strategy development. This paper presents the development cycle followed for a unique ABS controller.
