Development of Forward Collision Warning System using the Driver Behavioral Information

This paper discusses the development of a warning system that utilizes driver movement to control the timing of warning emission when it detects that the driver is not facing the vicinity of straight ahead. Driver face direction is based on information from a facial imaging camera gained through the use of facial image processing. This system was applied to the warning system that synchronized with pre-crash safety (PCS). The warning system has made it possible to output a warning that will allow drivers enough time to take obstacle-avoiding actions when a vehicle is in motion with the driver not facing the vicinity of straight ahead and it appears as though there will be a delay between the driver hearing the warning and recognizing the obstacle. Thus, by providing the driver with early warning, it is also possible to add to the damage-reducing effect of the PCS in the event of a collision.

Development of a New Pre-crash Safety System

Systems already exist that reduce collision damage through collision-danger alarms and by operating such features as pre-tensioning seat belts and collision mitigation brakes when the system has determined the possibility of a collision by using millimeter-wave radar. Conversely, at present, carelessness in observing oncoming traffic accounts for a large percentage of head-on collisions. Timely collision warnings are effective in avoiding accidents and for mitigating the severity of the collision. However, warnings given too early even before the driver has had a chance to carry out normal evasive maneuvers, can annoy the driver. Accordingly, by adding a driver face direction sensor, the authors have developed in the present research a system that will only hasten the timing of warnings when the system has detected the direction of the driver's face and determined that they are not facing the front of the vehicle.

TRACE CONTAMINANTS CONTROL ASSEMBLY DEVELOPMENT FOR THE JAPANESE CLOSED ECOLOGY EXPERIMENT FACILITIES

In the closed environments such as manned space station, it is necessary to remove contaminant gas to keep a suitable environment. Removal of gaseous contaminants generated from crew, animals, and plants is important function to keep the environment below the allowable level in the Closed Ecology Experiment Facilities (abbreviated as CEEF). CEEF consist of three modules for habitat, animal and plant, the supporting facilities for each module and a plant cultivation facility. CEEF are scheduled to be constructed from 1994 in Aomori Prefecture, northern part of Japan. For designing Trace Contaminant Control Assembly (TCCA) for CEEF, the following six (6) trace contaminants have been selected as major contaminant gas in CEEF; Ammonia (NH3) Methane (CH4) Ethylene (C2H4) Carbon Monoxide (CO) Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) Ethylene is well-known as an aggressive contaminant to plant growth and maturity.
