The New Changan Inline 4 Cylinder 1.6 L Gasoline Naturally Aspirated GDI Engine

Changan has upgraded its 1.6 L naturally aspirated GDI engine to meet future fuel economy and emission regulation base on its previous 1.6 L naturally aspirated GDI engine, the major upgrades include a high compression ratio of 13, 35Mpa direct injection system, cooled external EGR, thermo management module,and extensive measures to reduce friction. With this new engine, the vehicle fuel consumption is reduced by 9%, and meet the China 6b emission standard without GPF.

Effect of Fuel Detergent on Injector Deposit Formation and Engine Emissions in a Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) Engine

Gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines have been developed rapidly in recent years, driven by stringent legislative requirements on vehicle fuel efficiency and emissions. However, one challenge facing GDI is the formation of particulate emissions, particularly with the presence of injector tip deposits. The Chinese market features some gasoline fuels that contain no detergent additives and are prone to deposit formation, which can affect engine performance and emissions. The use of detergent additives to mitigate the formation of injector deposits in a GDI engine was investigated in this study by testing a 1.5L turbocharged GDI engine available in the Chinese market. The engine was operated both on base gasoline and on gasoline dosed with detergent additives to evaluate the effect on injector deposit formation and engine performance and emissions.

A Prediction Method of Fatigue Strength for Crankshaft Fillet Rolling Process

This work addresses the problem of fatigue strength prediction of crankshaft fillet rolling processes to improve its accuracy. It is empirical to usually consider the effect of fillet rolling process on crankshaft fatigue performance. The fatigue performance of rolling process is mainly determined by induced compressive residual stresses, increased hardness and reduced roughness. Because the first two factors are difficult to measure the arc surface of fillet rolled cranks, it is difficult to predict the enhanced rate of crankshaft rolled performance to baseline unrolled’s. In this work a prediction method of fatigue strength for ductile cast iron crankshafts rolling process is presented. This method indirectly predicts the effect of the increased hardness on fatigue performance by the resonant bending fatigue test and modelling of crankshaft fillet rolling dynamic for the induced compressive residual stress.

The Impact of GDI Injector Deposits on Engine Combustion and Emission

Gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine technology is now widely used due to its high fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions. However, particulate emissions pose one challenge to GDI technology, particularly in the presence of fuel injector deposits. In this paper, a 4-cylinder turbocharged GDI engine in the Chinese market was selected and operated at 2000rpm and 3bar BMEP condition for 55 hours to accumulate injector deposits. The engine spark timing, cylinder pressure, combustion duration, brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), gaseous pollutants which include total hydro carbon (THC), NOx (NO and NO2) and carbon dioxide (CO), and particulate emissions were measured before and after the injector fouling test at eight different operating conditions. Test results indicated that mild injector fouling can result in an effect on engine combustion and emissions despite a small change in injector flow rate and pulse width.

Study on Methods of Coupling Numerical Simulation of Conjugate Heat Transfer and In-Cylinder Combustion Process in GDI Engine

Wall temperature in GDI engine is influenced by both water jacket and gas heat source. In turn, wall temperature affects evaporation and mixing characteristics of impingement spray as well as combustion process and emissions. Therefore, in order to accurately simulate combustion process, accurate wall temperature is essential, which can be obtained by conjugate heat transfer (CHT) and piston heat transfer (PHT) models based on mapping combustion results. This CHT model considers temporal interaction between solid parts and cooling water. This paper presents an integrated methodology to reliably predict in-cylinder combustion process and temperature field of a 2.0L GDI engine which includes engine head/block/gasket and water jacket components. A two-way coupling numerical procedure on the basis of this integrated methodology is as follows.

Laminar Burning, Combustion and Emission Characteristics of Premixed Methane- Dissociated Methanol-Air Mixtures

This research presents an experimental study of the laminar burning combustion and emission characteristics of premixed methane -dissociated methanol-air mixtures in a constant volume combustion chamber. All experiments were conducted at 3 bar initial pressure and 373K initial temperature. The dissociated methanol fractions were from 20% to 80% with 20% intervals, and the equivalence ratio varied from 0.6 to 1.8 with 0.2 intervals. The images of flame propagation were visualized by using a schlieren system. The combustion pressure data were measured and exhaust emissions were sampled with a portable exhaust gas analyzer. The results show that the unstretched laminar burning velocities increased significantly with dissociated methanol enrichment. The Markstein length decreased with increasing dissociated methanol fraction and decreasing equivalence ratio.

Simulation Guided Design for Developing Direct Injection Combustion Systems of Gasoline Engines

This paper describes a simulation guided design methodology for developing direct injection combustion systems of gasoline engines. The first step is the optimization of engine gas flow. The intake port is optimized by CFD simulations to compromise the engine breathing capacity and its tumble flow. Secondly, the piston crown shapes and the injection system designs (injection pressure, hole number, hole size and orientations) are optimized based on dedicated CFD simulation results. Thirdly, different injection strategies are used at different engine operating conditions to achieve best engine performance, such as split injections being used at cold starting and catalyst heating period to realize stratified charge combustion for fast catalyst light-off, and a single injection being used to achieve homogeneous mixture combustion at almost all other operating conditions.

The Impact of Injector Deposits on Spray and Particulate Emission of Advanced Gasoline Direct Injection Vehicle

Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines have developed rapidly in recent years driven by fuel efficiency and consumption requirements, but face challenges such as injector deposits and particulate emissions compared to Port Fuel Injection (PFI) engines. While the mechanisms of GDI injector deposits formation and that of particulate emissions have been respectively revealed well, the impact of GDI injector deposits and their relation to particulate emissions have not yet been understood very well through systematic approach to investigate vehicle emissions together with injector spray analysis. In this paper, an experimental study was conducted on a GDI vehicle produced by a Chinese Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and an optical spray test bench to determine the impact of injector deposits on spray and particulate emissions.

An Investigation of Abnormal Spray Behaviors of Multi-Hole GDI Injector

The main objective of this paper is to investigate the influence of injection pressures and fuel temperatures on the secondary injection spray evolution at the end of injection from a multi-hole gasoline direct injection (GDI) injector by Mie-scattering technique. The results of this paper show that the overall injection process can be classified into five stages which are injection delay stage, main injection stage, dwell stage, secondary injection stage and ligaments breakup stage respectively. Especially, the secondary injection occurs at the end of main injection, which is abnormal and undesirable spray behaviors. During the injection, big droplets and ligaments are injected through nozzle orifices at low speed. As the injection pressure increases, the phase of the secondary injection advances, and the injection duration decreases. At medium injection pressures (at 6, 8 MPa), more quantity of fuel are injected as ligaments.

Study of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Evolution Processing in GDI Engines Using TRF-PAH Chemical Kinetic Mechanism

In the present study, we developed a reduced TRF-PAH chemical reaction mechanism consisted of iso-octane, n-heptane and toluene as gasoline surrogate fuels for GDI (gasoline direct injection) spark ignition engine combustion simulation. The reduced mechanism consists of 85 species and 232 reactions including 17 species and 40 reactions related to the PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) formation. The present mechanism was validated for extensive validations with experimental ignition delay times in shock tubes and laminar flame speeds in flat flame adiabatic burner for gasoline/air and TRF/air mixtures under various pressures, temperatures and equivalence ratios related to engine conditions. Good agreement was achieved for most of the measurement. Mole fraction profiles of PAHs for n-heptane flame were also simulated and the experimental trends were reproduced well. The vapor-phase and particulate-bound PAHs existed in GDI engine exhaust were sampled and analyzed by GC-MS.

Comparative Analysis on Performance and Particulate Emissions of a Turbocharged Common-Rail Engine Fueled with Diesel and Biodiesels

Performance and particulate emissions of a modern common-rail and turbocharged diesel engine fueled with diesel and biodiesel fuels were comparatively studied. An electrical low-pressure impactor (ELPI) was employed to measure particle size distribution and number concentration. Two biodiesel fuels, BDFs (biodiesel from soybean oil) and BDFc (biodiesel from used cooking oil), as well as ultra-low sulfur diesel were used. The study shows that biodiesels give higher thermal efficiency than diesel. Biodiesels give obviously lower exhaust gas temperature than diesel under high engine speed. The differences in fuel consumption, thermal efficiency and exhaust gas temperature between BDFs and BDFc are negligible. The first peaks of heat release rate for biodiesels are lower than that of diesel, while the second peaks are higher and advanced for biodiesels. BDFs show slightly slower heat release than BDFc during the first heat release stage at low engine speed.

Influence of Biodiesel/Diesel Blends on Particulate Emissions in a Turbocharged Common Rail Diesel Engine

Experiments were conducted in a turbocharged, high-pressure common rail diesel engine to investigate particulate emissions from the engine fueled with biodiesel and diesel blends. An electrical low-pressure impactor (ELPI) was employed to measure the particle size distribution and number concentration. Heated dilution was used to suppress nuclei mode particles and focus on accumulation mode particles. The experiment was carried out at five engine loads and two engine speeds. Biodiesel fractions of 10%, 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% in volume were tested. The study shows that most of the particles are distributed with their diameters between 0.02 and 0.2 μm, and the number concentration becomes quite small for the particles with the diameters larger than 0.2 μm. With the increase of biodiesel fraction, engine speed and/or engine load, particle number concentration decreases significantly, while the particle size distribution varies little.

Experimental Study on Injector Spray Pattern Optimization for a Turbocharged GDI Engine Combustion System

Changan Automobile Company recently develops a new 1.0L turbocharged GDI engine for its future vehicle as an affordable fuel-saving option. Fuel direct injection and turbo-charging are integrated to significantly improve fuel economy and power. Injection spray pattern plays an important role on GDI engine combustion system because of its critical influences on combustion and oil dilution. In this paper, four injector patterns were tested in an optical engine with Planar, double sided Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) with fuel & tracer and flame imaging methods to evaluate spray, mixture formation and combustion process in cylinder. Spray pattern and mixture formation are studied using LIF, while flame and combustion characteristics are studied by flame natural luminosity. The pictures of piston crown and glass liner are also evaluated for fuel spray impingement. Four types of multi-hole injectors are prepared.

Influences on Combustion Characteristics and Performances of EGR vs. Lean Burn in a Gasoline Engine

Due to its load control strategy via fresh charge quantity, pumping loss in a homogenous charge gasoline engine is a significant contributor to the high fuel consumption rate at light load. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and lean burn technologies are the common means to reduce gasoline engine pumping loss for fuel economy improvement. Many previous publications compared the EGR and lean burn concepts. However, few of those were able to compare the EGR and lean burn concepts under the same in-cylinder dilution basis. Usually the un-swept in-cylinder residual gas fraction (RGF), which can be significant at very low loads, was ignored due to lack of appropriate method to determine it. Also the theoretical potential and practical limitations were rarely discussed. In this paper, a Naturally Aspirated (NA) gasoline engine was systematically tested for both the EGR and lean mixture concepts on an engine dyno. under the same speed and load conditions.
