Identification Nomenclature for Electric Motors and Generators

2015-04-14
2015-01-0247
There are variety of motors and generators/alternators being manufactured internationally, for variety of applications. It is a difficult task for the user to identify and select the type of motor /generator/alternator for a specific use, by the designer and ultimately the user is totally unaware of what is bought and why. There is a need to designate the motors and generators. So that by interpretation of the identification nomenclature of the motor or generator, its type can be judged. Whether it is a series motor, an induction motor etc, in case of motors. This will eventually make it easy for the manufacturer, the buyer and the consumer to identify the motor or generator type. So a universally accepted and followed identification nomenclature is required to be developed which will henceforth make dealing in motors and generators simpler for all. It will prove to be useful during troubleshooting.

The torque and current requirement of a vehicle, be it a hybrid vehicle or purely electric vehicle, tends to vary as per the variations in the driving cycles, for example while going uphill the torque requirement of the vehicle entails for a sudden increase and similarly when the vehicle is traversing downhill the torque requirement of the vehicle deteriorates. In case of hybrid vehicles as well as purely electric vehicles, the electric motor forms the integral part which caters to the torque and current requirements. Since the performances of various electric motors are distinct from one another due to their unique characteristics, so for an optimized output one has to compromise upon one parameter or the other. In order to avoid this and enhance the performance in this research, instead of using a single electric motor to satisfy the vehicle's requirement like that of torque and current, two or more than two electric motors are used in order to avail their combined features.

Looking onto the concerned issue of the fast pace increase in running costs due to sky rocketing fuel prices and stringent emission norms in the automotive industry, the pre-eminent solution is HEVs and EVs, which henceforth proves to be elucidating. For the deeper study of HEVs and EVs in order to get improvised solutions for the above mentioned issues, the motor forms an indispensable part of it, being the propelling force either full time or by providing part time propulsion to the vehicle. From times immemorial motors are being used in HEVs and EVs as prime force, and the usage of motor has undergone various changes, from DC motors being used initially to AC motors finding applications in present with some special motors. Motors are categorized into three: Elementary DC motors, AC motors and Special motors.
