Hill Start Assistance Developed for Buses Equipped with AMT

The AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) has attracted increasing interest of automotive researches, because it has some advantages of both MT (Manual Transmission) and AT (Automatic Transmission), such as low cost, high efficiency, easy to use and good comfort. The hill-start assistance is an important feature of AMT. The vehicle will move backward, start with jerk, or cause engine stalling if failed on the slope road. For manual transmission, hill-start depends on the driver's skills to coordinate with the brake, clutch and throttle pedal to achieve a smooth start. However, with the AMT, clutch pedal is removed and therefore, driver can’t perceive the clutch position, making it difficult to hill-start with AMT without hill-start control strategy. This paper discussed about the hill start control strategy and its functioning.

Performance Optimization of Electronically Controlled Hydraulic Fan Drive (HFD) Used in Commercial Application

Ever tightening emission limits and constant pressure for increasing engine power are resulting in increased engine operating temperature. This coupled with continuous drive for fuel economy improvement because of the stiff competition are forcing OEMs to explore alternative cooling solutions resulting in less power take off and quick response as cooling requirement shoots up. Aim of this paper is to analyze the relative benefits of incorporating a new cooling fan drive system concept over conventional viscous fan driven cooling system with step-less variable speed control independent of engine speed variation. Hydraulic fan drive system control fan rpm based on the fluid temperature as compared to air temperature in viscous coupling fan drive system. HFD system provides quick response when increase in coolant temperature is observed. HFD system in this way provide more control on fan rpm.

Air Compressor Duty Cycle Reduction in Passenger Bus Application

Today urban buses are equipped with more air consuming devices for an example pneumatic doors, exhaust brake, air suspension and in SCR system to name a few. This has resulted in higher air demand leading to high compressor duty cycles which cause conditions (such as higher compressor head temperatures) that may adversely affect air brake charging system performance. These conditions may require additional maintenance due to a higher amount of oil vapor droplets being passed along into the air brake system. Factors that add to the duty cycle are air suspension, additional air accessories, use of an undersized compressor, frequent stops, excessive air leakage from fittings, connections, lines, chambers or valves, etc. This paper discussed about methodology used to reduce air consumption of air consuming devices used in urban bus application. Performance assessment of air consuming devices with minimum available air pressure was conducted and found satisfactory.

Urea Quality Sensor Integration in Urea Supply Line / Urea Tank

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is a promising technology for diesel after treatment. SCR can be used to meet Euro IV and even stringent emission standards. Dosing of urea must be controlled to lower NOx emission and NH3 slip simultaneously. An Aqueous solution of urea (AUS 32, Ad Blue and DEF) is used to full fill this requirement. As per the legislation limit (On board diagnostic requirement) the concentration of urea in solution should be 32.5 %. In this paper we discussed about the installation of urea quality sensor and it's on vehicle validation.
