A Cloud-Based Simulation and Testing Framework for Large-Scale EV Charging Energy Management and Charging Control

The emerging need of building an efficient Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure requires the investigation of all aspects of Vehicle-Grid Integration (VGI), including the impact of EV charging on the grid, optimal EV charging control at scale, and communication interoperability. This paper presents a cloud-based simulation and testing platform for the development and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing of VGI technologies. Although the HIL testing of a single charging station has been widely performed, the HIL testing of spatially distributed EV charging stations and communication interoperability is limited. To fill this gap, the presented platform is developed that consists of multiple subsystems: a real-time power system simulator (OPAL-RT), ISO 15118 EV Charge Scheduler System (EVCSS), and a Smart Energy Plaza (SEP) with various types of charging stations, solar panels, and energy storage systems.

Integration of OpenADR with Node-RED for Demand Response Load Control Using Internet of Things Approach

The increased market share of electric vehicles and renewable energy resources have raised concerns about their impact on the current electrical distribution grid. To achieve sustainable and stable power distribution, a lot of effort has been made to implement smart grids. This paper addresses Demand Response (DR) load control in a smart grid using Internet of Things (IoT) technology. A smart grid is a networked electrical grid which includes a variety of components and sub-systems, including renewable energy resources, controllable loads, smart meters, and automation devices. An IoT approach is a good fit for the control and energy management of smart grids. Although there are various commercial systems available for smart grid control, the systems based on open sources are limited. In this study, we adopt an open source development platform named Node-RED to integrate DR capabilities in a smart grid for DR load control. The DR system employs the OpenADR standard.

Development and Implementation of SAE J2953 for AC Charging

The purpose of this paper is to outline the development and implementation of SAE J2953. SAE J2953 contains the requirements and procedures of interoperability testing. Within SAE J2953 interoperability test articles are defined as an Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) paired with a Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PEV). SAE J2953 requires the development and application of test fixtures with the ability to monitor mechanical forces and electrical signals of a charge system without modification or disassembly of the EVSE and PEV under test. Electrical signal monitoring includes pilot, proximity, and line conductors of the SAE J1772 TM AC coupler. This paper will outline the requirements of the fixtures as well as a specific build. Data will be presented showing full implementation of the SAE J2953 procedures including root-cause analysis and standards gap discovery.

Development and Implementation of SAE DC Charging Digital Communication for Plug-in Electric Vehicle DC Charging

This paper outlines the development and progress of implementing the SAE J2931, J2847/2 and J1772 communication standards to accomplish off-board DC charging. Communication between the off-board DC Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) and Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PEV) occurs on the pilot wire of the SAE J1772 connector via HomePlug Green PHY power line communication (PLC). An Electric Vehicle Communication Controller (EVCC) was developed to interface with the PEV's Battery Energy Control Module (BECM). A Supply Equipment Communication Controller (SECC) was also developed to interface with the DC EVSE's Power Control Module (PCM). Firmware was developed to implement the SAE J2931/1 communication stack, which is harmonized with the ISO/IEC DIS 15118-2 and DIN 70121 standards for DC charging communication.
