Reduction of Ammonia Emission using Deceleration Cylinder Cutoff in a Gasoline Spark Ignition Engine

The newly proposed Euro 7 emission standards have added regulations limiting ammonia emissions for gasoline vehicles. This paper proposes a new emissions-control strategy to satisfy the regulated ammonia emission levels, using deceleration cylinder cut-off (DCCO) to reduce or eliminate conventional deceleration fuel cutoff (DFCO) and the associated lean-rich excursions in the three-way catalyst during oxygen saturation and desaturation. The improved air-fuel ratio management closer to stoichiometry lowers the ratio of CO to NOx and thus the ammonia (NH3) formation rate inside catalytic converter. Tests show more than 80% reduction of ammonia emission on the WLTC drive cycle without increasing other regulated emissions.

Electrified Deceleration Cylinder Cutoff Engine Control Benefits and Strategies

Cylinder deactivation is a fuel consumption and CO2 reduction technology for internal combustion engines that deactivates cylinders at light to moderate loads, allowing the remaining firing cylinders to operate near optimum efficiency. Dynamic Skip Fire (DSF) uses full-authority cylinder deactivation that allows any cylinder of the engine to be deactivated in sequence. In previous SAE papers, both DSF technology and the synergies between DSF and electrification (eDSF) have been described. Recent engine technology includes deactivation mechanisms that do not effectively incorporate individual cylinder control. Nevertheless, it is still quite possible to improve the efficiency of engines equipped with these ganged-deactivation mechanisms. By grouping all cylinders into a deactivation mode, no air is pumped through the cylinders as it would be during the corresponding conventional operation that deactivates fuel alone.

Controls and Hardware Development of Multi-Level Miller Cycle Dynamic Skip Fire (mDSF) Technology

mDSF is a novel cylinder deactivation technology developed at Tula Technology, which combines the torque control of Dynamic Skip Fire (DSF) with Miller cycle engines to optimize fuel efficiency at minimal cost. mDSF employs a valvetrain with variable valve lift plus deactivation and novel control algorithms founded on Tula’s proven DSF technology. This allows cylinders to dynamically alternate among 3 potential states designated as: High Fire, Low Fire, and Skip (deactivation). The Low Fire state is achieved through an aggressive Miller cycle with Early Intake Valve Closing (EIVC). The three operating states in mDSF can be used to simultaneously optimize engine efficiency and driveline vibrations. Acceleration performance is retained using the all-cylinder, High Fire mode. mDSF can be implemented cost-effectively using an asymmetric intake valve lift strategy, with one high-flow power charging port and one high-efficiency Miller port.

Development of Electrical-Electronic Controls for a Gasoline Direct Injection Compression Ignition Engine

Delphi is developing a new combustion technology called Gasoline Direct-injection Compression Ignition (GDCI), which has shown promise for substantially improving fuel economy. This new technology is able to reuse some of the controls common to traditional spark ignition (SI) engines; however, it also requires several new sensors and actuators, some of which are not common to traditional SI engines. Since this is new technology development, the required hardware set has continued to evolve over the course of the project. In order to support this development work, a highly capable and flexible electronic control system is necessary. Integrating all of the necessary functions into a single controller, or two, would require significant up-front controller hardware development, and would limit the adaptability of the electronic controls to the evolving requirements for GDCI.

Combustion Characteristics of a Single-Cylinder Engine Equipped with Gasoline and Ethanol Dual-Fuel Systems

The requirement of reduced emissions and improved fuel economy led the introduction of direct-injection (DI) spark-ignited (SI) engines. Dual-fuel injection system (direct-injection and port-fuel-injection (PFI)) was also used to improve engine performance at high load and speed. Ethanol is one of the several alternative transportation fuels considered for replacing fossil fuels such as gasoline and diesel. Ethanol offers high octane quality but with lower energy density than fossil fuels. This paper presents the combustion characteristics of a single cylinder dual-fuel injection SI engine with the following fueling cases: a) gasoline for PFI and DI, b) PFI gasoline and DI ethanol, and c) PFI ethanol and DI gasoline. For this study, the DI fueling portion varied from 0 to 100 percentage of the total fueling over different engine operational conditions while the engine air-to-fuel ratio remained at a constant level.
