Design for Remanufacturing: The Requirement for Today and Tomorrow

2016-09-27
2016-01-8137
The overall cost of ownership of a product is dependent on the life of the product and the cost. To keep the cost of ownership down, it is important to understand how the life of the product can be increased while lowering the cost at the same time. We are also challenged to reduce the carbon footprint and improve energy requirements to become more sustainable and green. How can both of these necessities be achieved? “Remanufacturing” is a simple answer to this complex question. Remanufacturing can improve the useable life of a part or product by multiple times. It is cost effective compared to new part production and is reasonably inexpensive to end customer. The energy required for remanufacturing is less compared to its original manufacturing. Remanufacturing reuses/salvages most of the original content. Design for Remanufacturing is a fundamental change in design engineering process to meet remanufacturing requirements.

Driveline Optimization by Mini Crossmember

Several critical factors influence the conventional practice of defining driveline propeller shafts. One of these is the location of the center bearing bracket mounting. This in-turn depends on the frame ladder's crossmember. It has been observed that this dependence results in more number of joints and propeller shafts. “Driveline optimization by mini crossmember” is one of the solutions that offers flexibility in regards to the location of the center bearing bracket. Also this helps in achieving optimization.

Feature Addition or Enhancement by using Model Based Design

Feature Addition or Enhancement is a necessary fragment of product development. Feature Addition or Enhancement is a result of one of the following: scope addition to new product development or customer requirement on current products. When it comes to Scope Addition, most of the times, first phase design and engineering will have been completed. Feature Addition or Enhancement because of scope addition is done to improve quality, cost or marketability. Current or future customer request for a feature addition or enhancement to meet their needs leads to customer requirement Feature Addition or Enhancement. Most of the times, vehicle has already been launched and design is frozen. In both the cases, design and engineering is challenged by Time, Effort and Cost. Model Based Design approach helps save some time for implementation. It also helps to improve required effort and reduces the cost of the feature by optimization.

Outsourcing: A strategic process review

2009-10-06
2009-01-2916
The world of globalization and competitive pricing structure always leads to Outsourcing. A number of companies have used outsourcing as a tool to reduce cost or make some processes more efficient. Instead of directly jumping to outsourcing as a solution, companies need to analyze the issue systematically. Some companies in the world use a systematic approach to outsourcing and some don't. At least every company and management needs to know certain guidelines for outsourcing. This paper is an effort towards showing that systematic approach. I recommend all companies, ventures, joint ventures, partnerships to go through this paper and check whether there is an opportunity for improvement in the current process. This paper is very useful to the management and strategy leaders.
