A Study of the Influence of Pad Properties and Disc Coning on High Speed Judder

The effects of pad properties and thermal coning of discs on high speed judder were investigated using dynamometer and vehicle tests. The friction materials of different thermal conductivities were manufactured and the discs were design-modified to control the thermal coning during braking under high speed conditions. Brake Torque Variation(BTV) was measured to evaluate the judder propensity in the dynamometer tests and the vibration on steering wheel and brake pedal was measured in the vehicle tests. The results showed that the increase of thermal conductivity of pad could not affect the judder propensity during high speed braking below 350°C of disc temperature, however better disc design reduced judder propensity due to the lower thermal deformation. Moreover, the increase of pad compressibility can reduce judder propensity due to the increase of damping capacity.

Considerations for PWM Control of Automotive Lamps and its Modeling

PWM control is used to regulate the power supplied to automotive exterior lamps. This paper proposes several considerations for PWM control of lamps, which are power dissipation, lamp lifetime, V-I characteristics, duty ratio, inrush duration, slew rate, over current threshold and so on. These considerations cause some side effects such as overheating of switching devices, EMI/EMC, halogen cycles and so on. A Simulink model based on other studies is used to investigate these considerations. Design considerations are proposed based on simulation results.

A study on Reducing the Computing Burden of Misfire Detection using a Conditional Monitoring Method

This paper presents a conditional misfire monitoring method to reduce the computing burden of the motoring. In this conditional monitoring method, the ECU performs misfire detection only when there is high probability of misfire events. The condition for performing the misfire detection is determined by the pre-index which is defined as the deviation of the segment durations of the crankshaft in this paper. The quantity of the code of calculating the pre-index is 7 times less than that of a conventional monitoring method so that the computing burden can be reduced with the conditional monitoring method. The experimental results shown that the pre-index and the conditional monitoring method are valid.
