Development of a New PVC-Gel Actuator for Implementing Emotional Vibration

Electro-hydraulic actuators, a type of soft actuators, can provide soft-touch vibrations due to their structural characteristics, but some problems need to be improved to apply them to vehicles. That is, it is necessary to increase excitation force, expand frequency band, lower driving voltage, and increase durability. This research aims to design a new type based on electro-hydraulic actuator and improve problems with its performance to develop a product that generates emotional vibration in vehicles. First, a new mechanism and design of an electro-hydraulic actuator called a PVC-gel film actuator are proposed. This actuator uses PVC-gel as a film which covers a dielectric liquid and uses carbon nanotube as a cathode material. In addition, a method of manufacturing an actuator with improved performance has been proposed by creating and testing prototypes with different sizes and material properties.

Efficient Method for Active Sound Design Using an NVH Simulator

Active Sound Design (ASD) allows the Personalized Engine Sound System to be implemented for different types of vehicles and in different geographical regions. While this process is possible, it requires a lot of on-road tuning and therefore is very time consuming. This study presents an efficient way of tuning ASD sounds based on binaural synthesis in a lab environment instead of on-road tuning. The on-road vehicle operating sounds are reproduced by a desktop NVH simulator while the binaural ASD sounds are synthesized by convolving measured Binaural Vehicle Impulse Responses with the output of ASD multi-channel amplifier in real time. A set of binaural recordings on road are compared with the reproduced sound in the lab environment. The comparison results showed the validity of the proposed method for ASD. The main advantage of this approach is the possibility of back-to-back comparison across different ASD tunings.

A Research on Brand Sound Positioning and Implementing with Active Sound Design

This paper aims to establish a systematic process of developing a brand driving sound. Firstly, principal factors of a brand sound identity are extracted from factor analysis of many sample cars. As a result, brand sound positioning map is drawn using jury test data. Also, the multiple regression analysis of subjective and objective test results is carried. As a result, the principal factors are expressed by objective test data and brand sound positioning map can be easily updated from the measurement data. In addition, what should be improved for designing a target sound is reviewed. Secondly, various technologies of target sound design are discussed to involve the brand identity and vehicle’s character in driving sound. Also, an efficient tool to implement the target sound with an active sound design (ASD) system in a vehicle is introduced. This tool enables to efficiently design, tune and simulate a target sound for ASD system in a laboratory.

A Systematic Approach to Engine Sound Design for Enhancing Sound Character by Active Sound Design

This paper presents a systematic approach to interior engine sound design for enhancing sound character of car interior sound effectively. Nowadays an active noise control technology is widely used in vehicle industry. Particularly, an active sound design (ASD) technique using vehicle’s audio system for controlling interior sound due to powertrain has become a general method to improve sound quality or character. The ASD system using speakers has the advantage of creating various sounds relatively easy. In this study, the novel systematic approach is proposed to guide the efficient design of powerful and pleasant acceleration sound by order spectrum analysis. At first, primary attributes of powerful and pleasant sound were analyzed and sound concept was derived. Secondly, the optimal linearity and the level envelope of firing order were derived by subjective evaluation.

A Novel Method for Objective Evaluation of Interior Sound in a Passenger Car and Its Application to the Design of Interior Sound in a Luxury Passenger Car

Recently the interior sound is actively generated by the active sound design (ASD) device in a passenger car. Therefore, the objective evaluation method for the sound quality of actively designed sounds is required. In previous research, the sound quality of interior sound has been presented with powerful and pleasant for the existing passenger car. This paper presents a novel approach method for the objective evaluation of powerfulness and pleasantness of actively designed interior sound. The powerfulness has been evaluated based on the degreed of modulation and a quantity of low frequency booming of the sound in the paper. On the other hand, the pleasantness is evaluated based on the slope ratio of harmonic orders per octave in frequency domain. These evaluation methods are successfully applied to the objective evaluation of luxury passenger car.

Technology of an Emotional Engine Sound Designing for Active Sound Control Using Order Balance and Musical Instrument Sound

This paper discusses approaches to emotionally improve the driving sound based on Active Sound Design (ASD). In the first step, target sound design methods are suggested in order to represent the vehicle’s concept and brand image via a driving sound. In this method, formant filter and musical chords are applied to the target sound synthesis. In the second step, a technique to make a target sound realistic in ASD system is discussed, which enables to stimulate the customers' emotion. In this technique, the process to simulate a musical instrument sound for a vivid driving sound and synthesize the sound with FIR filter is studied. Finally, the improved driving sound is demonstrated in ASD system.

Development of Personalized Engine Sound System using Active Sound Design Technology

An important trend among vehicle NVH engineers is the production of attractive engine acceleration sound quality for the enhancement of a vehicle's image and performance. In addition, customers have increasing interest and enjoyment in customizing their cars to reflect their personal taste and preferences. The PESS (Personalized Engine Sound System) has been developed for making a unique and individually customizable vehicle concept. The system allows the customers an opportunity to create a variety of engine sounds in a single vehicle using active sound design technology. In this system, three different engine sound concepts are pre-defined, Dynamic, Sporty, and Extreme. Each of the engine sounds can then be adjusted with parameters that determine the timbre, such as main order, rumble, and high order. In addition, the pedal position during acceleration has also been used as a parameter to further personalize the experience.

A Study on the Strategy and Implementing Technology for the Development of Luxurious Driving Sound

This paper describes a systematic approach to the development of a luxurious driving sound. In the first step, the luxurious sound is conceptualized through jury test, factor analysis and regression analysis. From the results, the main factors and the correlation equation for the luxurious sound are extracted. Also, customer's preference for the luxurious sound is investigated from the customer clinic. In the second step, three core axes and the detailed indices for luxurious sound are defined and quantified. These core axes are a dynamic sound character, a sound balance and a sound harmony. These core axes are also composed of detailed indices and quantified by guide lines. In the third step, each contribution of the sub-systems for sound quality is identified and the target values and methods for implementing the luxurious sound are suggested. In this process, noise path analysis and the customer's preference in each region are considered.

Target Sound Development for Luxury Sedan based on Driving Experience and Preference Study

The sound sources of modern road vehicle can be classified into three components, driving sound (sound generated through normal driving patterns and events), operating sound (sound generated through actuated components not related to driving), and generated synthetic sound (electronic warning / interactive feedback). The characteristic features of these sounds are dependent upon customer expectation and usage requirements. Additional development complexities are introduced due to each market's cultural and regional differences. These differences in preference must be considered for the establishment of the target sound quality in the early vehicle development process. In this paper, a sound quality goal setting procedure based on user preference is introduced. The sound targets are created as a result of the user preference investigation and validated by intercultural comparison.

Characteristics of the Luxury Sound Quality of a Premium Class Passenger Car

Luxury sound is one of the most important sound qualities in a premium passenger car. Previous work has shown that, because of the effects of many different interior sounds, it is difficult to evaluate the luxury sound objectively by using only the A-weighted sound pressure level. In this paper, the characteristics of such sound were first investigated by a systematic approach and a new objective evaluation method for luxury sound-the luxury sound quality index--which was developed by the systematic combination of the seven major interior sound quality indexes based on path analysis. The seven major sounds inside a passenger car were selected by a basic investigation evaluated by the members of a luxury automotive club. Seven major interior sound quality indexes were developed by using sound metrics, which are the psychoacoustic parameters, and the multiple regression method used for the modeling of the correlation between objective and subjective evaluation.

Objective Evaluation for the Passenger Car During Acceleration Based on the Sound Metric and Artificial Neural Network

While driving a passenger car, a driver can hear many sorts of sounds inside of the car. Among these sounds, booming and rumbling sounds are classified as the dominant sound characteristics of passenger cars. A sound quality index evaluating the quality of these two sounds objectively is therefore required and is developed by using an artificial neural network (ANN) in the present paper. Throughout this research, the booming sound and rumbling sound were found to effectively relate the loudness, sharpness and roughness. The booming sound qualities and rumbling sound qualities for interior sounds were subjectively evaluated by 21 persons for the target of the ANN. After the ANN was trained, the two outputs of this ANN were used for the booming index and rumbling index, respectively. These outputs were tested in the evaluation of the sound quality of the interior sounds which were measured inside of the sixteen passenger cars.

Sound Quality Analysis of a Passenger Car Based on Rumbling Index

Rumbling sound is one of the most important sound qualities in a passenger car. In previous work, an objective evaluation method for rumbling sound was developed based on the principal component. In the present paper, the rumbling sound was found to effectively relate not only the loudness but also roughness. The last two subjective parameters are sound metrics in psychoacoustics. Principal rumble component, roughness and loudness were used as the sound metrics for the development of the rumbling index to evaluate the rumbling sound objectively. The relationship between rumbling index and these sound metrics is identified by an artificial neural network (ANN). Interior sounds of 14 passenger cars were measured, and 21 persons subjectively evaluated the rumbling sound qualities of these interior sounds. Throughout this research, it was found that the results of these evaluations and the output of a neural network have high correlation.

Booming Index Development for Sound Quality Evaluation of a Passenger Car

This paper presents a new booming index, which is developed by using psychoacoustics theory and neural network theory. The input of neural network is sound metrics for interior noise signal, which replace of the auditory system of a human. The neural network replace of the neuron structure of human' brain. The 150 sounds for the training of neural network or for optimization of the weights of the neuron have been synthesized by using a reference sound signal measured on the drive seat. The correlation for booming sounds between objective values evaluated by the trained neural network system and the subjective values evaluated by the 21 persons are well corresponded.
