Removing balance shaft from an inline 4 cylinder engine will improve gas efficiency. But the unbalanced rotation creates uneven shake force on engine mount and leads to rough vibration and noise. An active controlled mounting system is proposed in this paper to actively reduce vehicle noise and vibration. This system reduces the major order of engine noise and vibration, therefore improve overall NVH performance. An experimental study was conducted on a family sedan with I4 engine. Electromagnetic actuators were used to generate cancellation force. As a result, it dramatically improves overall passenger's NVH feeling on a vehicle without balance shaft.
