Numerical Investigation of the Impact of Fuel Flow Rate on Combustion in a Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine with a Multi-Row Nozzle Injector

Diesel engines are one of the most popular combustion systems used in different types of heavy-duty applications because of higher efficiencies compared to the spark ignition engines. Combustion phasing and the rate of heat release in diesel engines are controlled by the rate at which the fuel is injected into the combustion chamber near top dead center. In this work, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was employed to simulate the combustion behavior of a heavy-duty diesel engine equipped with a 16-hole injector, in which the nozzles were arranged in two individual rows. The two rows of nozzles have differential flow rate due to the geometrical construction of the injector. Combustion and performance characteristics of the engine were compared with and without considering the differential flow rate of the nozzle rows at a range of injection timing values.

Zero-Dimensional Heat Release Modeling Framework for Gasoline Compression-Ignition Engines with Multiple Injection Events

A zero-dimensional heat release model was developed for compression ignition engines. This type of model can be utilized for parametric studies, off-line optimization to reduce experimental efforts as well as model-based control strategies. In this particular case, the combustion model, in a simpler form, will be used in future efforts to control the combustion in compression ignition engines operating on gasoline-like fuels. To allow for a realistic representation of the in-cylinder combustion process, a spray model has been employed to allow for the quantification of fuel distribution as well as turbulent kinetic energy within the injection spray. The combustion model framework is capable of reflecting premixed as well as mixing controlled combustion. Fuel is assigned to various combustion events based on the air-fuel mixture within the spray.

Effect of Thermal Management on Engine Performance

The effect of engine coolant and oil temperature on the performance was experimentally evaluated on a Navistar 12.4 Liter engine. The engine speed and load selected for evaluation represented the engine conditions typically found during a Class-8 truck’s cruising operation. In order to study the effect of oil and coolant temperature in isolation, the production coolant-cooled oil-cooler was replaced with a separate oil and coolant conditioning system. The piston and liner surface temperature was also logged at select locations to provide solid temperature response to coolant and oil temperature changes. The engine tests showed that oil temperature variation had greater impact on the engine performance compared to the coolant temperature. This performance improvement came primarily from the lower combustion heat rejection and reduced friction at moderate engine loads. At higher engine loads the performance improvement was largely due to lowered heat rejection.

Modeling Heat Loss through Pistons and Effect of Thermal Boundary Coatings in Diesel Engine Simulations using a Conjugate Heat Transfer Model

Heat loss through wall boundaries play a dominant role in the overall performance and efficiency of internal combustion engines. Typical engine simulations use constant temperature wall boundary conditions [1, 2, 3]. These boundary conditions cannot be estimated accurately from experiments due to the complexities involved with engine combustion. As a result, they introduce a large uncertainty in engine simulations and serve as a tuning parameter. Modeling the process of heat transfer through the solid walls in an unsteady engine computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation can lead to the development of higher fidelity engine models. These models can be used to study the impact of heat loss on engine efficiency and explore new design methodologies that can reduce heat losses. In this work, a single cylinder diesel engine is modeled along with the solid piston coupled to the fluid domain.

Engine Technologies for Clean and High Efficiency Heavy Duty Engines

Diesel engine manufacturers have faced stringent emission regulations for oxides of nitrogen and particulate emissions for the last two decades. The emission challenges have been met with a host of technologies such as turbocharging, exhaust gas recirculation, high- pressure common rail fuel injection systems, diesel aftertreatment devices, and electronic engine controls. The next challenge for diesel engine manufacturers is fuel-economy regulations starting in 2014. As a prelude to this effort the department of energy (DOE) has funded the Supertruck project which intends to demonstrate 50% brake-thermal efficiency on the dynamometer while meeting US 2010 emission norms. In order to simultaneously meet the emission and engine efficiency goals in the cost effective manner engine manufacturer have adopted a systems approach, since individual fuel saving technologies can actually work against each other if fuel economy is not approached from a total vehicle perspective.

A Preliminary Study of Ignition Consistency and Heat Release Analysis for a Common-Rail Diesel Engine

Common-rail fuel systems have been recognized as an effective means to shape the heat release rate. In this paper measured cylinder pressure and fuel injection data for a common-rail diesel engine were analyzed to develop an empirical heat release rate model. A set of discrete Wiebe functions, one to describe the pilot injection combustion and the other to describe the main injection combustion, have been proposed to model the heat release data. The coefficients in the model were adjusted to match the observed heat release diagram. An expression for ignition delay for pilot injection and main injection has also been suggested for test conditions.
