SAE J2464, “Electric and Hybrid Electric Vehicle Rechargeable Energy Storage System (RESS) Safety and Abuse Testing” is one of the premier testing manuals for vehicle battery abuse in North America and the world. Abuse testing is performed to characterize the response of a Rechargeable Energy Storage Systems to off-normal conditions or environments that could reasonably be expected to occur, even if very infrequently. Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) and Electric Vehicles (EVs) depend on rechargeable energy storage devices such as batteries and capacitors to realize the benefits of improved performance and fuel economy. Safety of advanced energy storage devices needs to be demonstrated and accepted by OEMs to remove this crucial barrier to commercialization of advanced high energy batteries in HEVs and EVs. Widespread use of this new procedure will advance that goal.
