Determination of Impact Responses of ES-2re and SID-IIs - Part III: Development of Transfer Functions

An understanding of stiffness characteristics of different body regions, such as thorax, abdomen and pelvis of ES-2re and SID-IIs dummies under controlled laboratory test conditions is essential for development of both compatible performance targets for countermeasures and occupant protection strategies to meet the recently updated FMVSS214, LINCAP and IIHS Dynamic Side Impact Test requirements. The primary purpose of this study is to determine the transfer functions between the ES-2re and SID-IIs dummies for different body regions under identical test conditions using flat rigid wall sled tests. The experimental set-up consists of a flat rigid wall with five instrumented load-wall plates aligned with dummy’s shoulder, thorax, abdomen, pelvis and femur/knee impacting a stationary dummy seated on a rigid low friction seat at a pre-determined velocity.

The main purpose of this study was to determine the impact responses of the different body regions (shoulder, thorax, abdomen and pelvis/leg) of the ES-2re and SID-IIs dummies using rigid wall impacts under different initial test conditions. The experimental set-up consisted of a flat rigid wall with five instrumented load-wall plates aligned with dummy’s shoulder, thorax, abdomen, pelvis and knee impacting a stationary dummy seated on a rigid seat at a pre-determined velocity. The relative location and orientation of the load-wall plates was adjusted relative to the body regions of the ES-2re and SID-IIs dummies respectively.

The Influence of Body Mounted Shoulder Seat Belt Anchor (D-Ring) Displacement During Dynamic Vehicle-to-Ground Impacts

For more than 30 years, field research and laboratory testing have consistently demonstrated that properly wearing a seat belt dramatically reduces the risk of occupant death or serious injury in motor vehicle crashes. In severe rollover crashes, deformation to vehicle body structures can relocate body-mounted seat belt anchors altering seat belt geometry. In particular, roof pillar mounted shoulder belt anchors (“D-rings”) are subject to vertical and lateral deformation in the vehicle coordinate system. The ROllover Component test System (ROCS) test device was utilized to evaluate seat belt system performance in simulated severe rollover roof-to-ground impacts. A mechanical actuator was designed to dynamically relocate the D-ring assembly during a roof-to-ground impact event in an otherwise rigid test vehicle fixture. Anthropomorphic test device (ATD) kinematics and kinetics and seat belt tensions were compared between tests with and without D-ring relocation.

Bake-Hardening Effect of Dual Phase Steels

Tensile tests were performed on DP600 and DP780 dual-phase steels to determine the relative effects of bake-hardening on the static and dynamic material response. The quasi-static test variables were prestrain level, specimen orientation (longitudinal, transverse), and heat treatment (as-received, bake hardened). Dynamic tests were performed at rates ranging from 0.001/s to 500/s, with variables of prestrain level and heat treatment. Increases in the ultimate and yield strength for both DP600 and DP780 were mainly due to prestrain and strain rate effects. The bake-hardening effects varied with the material, amount of prestrain, and strain rate. Crush tests were also performed on DP780 tubes in the as-received and bake-hardened conditions at rates ranging from quasi-static up to 7250 mm/s. The energy absorption was similar regardless of the rate.

Aluminum Vehicle Side Impact Design, Test and CAE

Ford designed and built a midsize family sedan for the PNGV (Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicle). The side impact performance of the aluminum vehicle and the current CAE capability was studied. The vehicle was tested according to the specifications of FMVSS 214. The results show the vehicle meet the federal safety requirements. The impact performances of the front and rear dummies were comparable to those of the steel counterpart. CAE analysis was conducted to develop the body component design and to predict the structural and dummy responses. The results show that without modeling of the joint (rivet and weld) separation, the accuracy of the CAE crash analysis for this aluminum vehicle was inadequate. When empirical separation criteria were incorporated to model the joint, analysis results correlated with the test. Further development of robust modeling methods for joint separation is needed to improve the prediction of aluminum structure crash responses.
