The Impact of Pre-Chamber Design on Part Load Efficiency and Emissions of a Miller Cycle Light Duty Gasoline Engine

The efficiency and emission potential of pre-chamber combustion in a Miller cycle light duty gasoline engine operated under part load was evaluated. Several pre-chamber designs that examine the engine performance tradeoffs with nozzle diameter, pre-chamber volume, number of nozzles, and pre-chamber fuel enrichment were investigated for both excess air and cooled external EGR dilution strategies. The introduction of pre-chamber jet ignition was observed to significantly reduce the main-chamber combustion duration while reducing cyclic variability under dilute conditions, benefiting from the long-reach ignition jets and enhanced turbulence. However, the pre-chamber design that provided the fastest combustion led to reduced brake efficiency primarily due to increased wall heat loss. Maintaining the total nozzle area while increasing the number of nozzles was identified as a means to minimize the additional heat loss and maintain fast burn rates.

2-Stroke Engine Options for Automotive Use: A Fundamental Comparison of Different Potential Scavenging Arrangements for Medium-Duty Truck Applications

The work presented here seeks to compare different means of providing scavenging systems for an automotive 2-stroke engine. It follows on from previous work solely investigating uniflow scavenging systems, and aims to provide context for the results discovered there as well as to assess the benefits of a new scavenging system: the reverse-uniflow sleeve-valve. For the study the general performance of the engine was taken to be suitable to power a medium-duty truck, and all of the concepts discussed here were compared in terms of indicated fuel consumption for the same cylinder swept volume using a one-dimensional engine simulation package. In order to investigate the sleeve-valve designs layout drawings and analysis of the Rolls-Royce Crecy-type sleeve had to be undertaken.

CFD-Guided Combustion Strategy Development for a Higher Reactivity Gasoline in a Light-Duty Gasoline Compression Ignition Engine

The current study utilized 3-D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) combustion analysis to guide the development of a viable full load range combustion strategy in a light-duty gasoline compression ignition (GCI) engine. A higher reactivity gasoline that has a research octane number (RON) of 70 was used for the combustion strategy development. The engine has a geometric compression ratio of 14.5 with a piston bowl designed to accommodate different combustion strategies and injector spray patterns. Detailed combustion optimization was focused on 6 and 18 bar gross indicated mean effective pressure (IMEPg) at 1500 rpm through a Design of Experiments approach. Two different strategies were investigated: (a) a late triggering fuel injection with a wide spray angle (combustion strategy #1); and (b) an early triggering fuel injection with a narrow spray angle (combustion strategy #2).

Computational Development of a Dual Pre-Chamber Engine Concept for Lean Burn Combustion

Pre-chambers are a means to enable lean burn combustion strategies which can increase the thermal efficiency of gasoline spark ignition internal combustion engines. A new engine concept is evaluated in this work using computational simulations of non-reacting flow. The objective of the computational study was to evaluate the feasibility of several engine design configurations combined with fuel injection strategies to create local fuel/air mixtures in the pre-chambers above the ignition and flammability limits, while maintaining lean conditions in the main combustion chamber. The current work used computational fluid dynamics to develop a novel combustion chamber geometry where the flow was evaluated through a series of six design iterations to create ignitable mixtures (based on fuel-to-air equivalence ratio, ϕ) using fuel injection profiles and flow control via the piston, cylinder head, and pre-chamber geometry.

Mechanically Supercharged 2.4L GDI Engine for Improved Fuel Economy and Low Speed Torque Improvement

This paper describes the simulation, design, and testing of a mechanically supercharged 2.4L I-4 gasoline direct injection engine with Miller cycle late intake valve closing and high geometric compression ratio. Engine downspeeding is also achieved through modified transmission gear ratios. A 3.3L naturally-aspirated V6 engine was chosen as the benchmark for comparison. Intended vehicle application is a mid-size passenger car or small/mid-size CUV. The CAE tool GT-Power was used for component selection and air path development. The powertrain simulation model was then exercised to show both improved fuel economy and performance compared to the V6 baseline engine. The design of a bespoke integrated supercharger with magnetic clutch, charge air cooler, and intake manifold was made and procured. A large new software aggregate was ported into an existing production ECU with modified internal circuitry.

Development and Vehicle Demonstration of a Systems-Level Approach to Fuel Economy Improvement Technologies

Global fuel economy and CO2 reduction mandates are driving the need for a substantial increase in vehicle fuel efficiency over the next several years, with improvements coming from many sources. This paper describes a vehicle demonstration program to improve fuel economy by implementing a systems approach to reduce friction and parasitic losses. The work concentrated on nearer term technologies that can be quickly transferred to production vehicle programs. Major technologies demonstrated on the vehicle included gasoline direct injection (GDi) with cooled EGR, advanced valvetrain, rollerization of both crankshaft and camshaft, and stop-start engine operation. The work described in this paper comprises Phase I of a two phase program funded by DOE contract DE-EE0003258. It includes a hardware overview and a description of the system development activities. Results focus on vehicle fuel economy benefits compared to a production baseline vehicle.
