How Well Can mPEMS Measure Gas Phase Motor Vehicle Exhaust Emissions?

“Real world emissions” is an emerging area of focus in motor vehicle related air quality. These emissions are commonly recorded using portable emissions measurement systems (PEMS) designed for regulatory application, which are large, complex and costly. Miniature PEMS (mPEMS) is a developing technology that can significantly simplify on-board emissions measurement and potentially promote widespread use. Whereas full PEMS use analyzers to record NOx, CO, and HCs similar to those in emissions laboratories, mPEMS tend to use electrochemical sensors and compact optical detectors for their small size and low cost. The present work provides a comprehensive evaluation of this approach. It compares measurements of NOx, CO, CO2 and HC emissions from five commercial mPEMS to both laboratory and full regulatory PEMS analyzers. It further examines the use of vehicle on-board diagnostics data to calculate exhaust flow, as an alternative to on-vehicle exhaust flow measurement.

How Well Can mPEMS Measure Particulate Matter Motor Vehicle Exhaust Emissions?

Real world emissions are increasingly the standard of comparison for motor vehicle exhaust impact on the environment. The ability to collect such data has thus far relied primarily on full portable emissions measurement systems (PEMS) that are bulky, expensive, and time consuming to set up. The present work examines four compact, low cost, miniature PEMS (mPEMS) that offer the potential to expand our ability to record real world exhaust emissions over a larger number of operating conditions and combustion engine applications than currently possible within laboratory testing. It specifically addresses the particulate matter (PM) capabilities of these mPEMS, which employ three different methodologies for particle measurement: diffusion charger, optical scattering, and a multi-sensor approach that combines scattering, opacity, and ionization. Their performance is evaluated against solid particle number and PM mass with both vehicle tests and flame generated soot.

Using Artificial Ash to Improve GPF Performance at Zero Mileage

Gasoline particulate filters (GPF) with high filtration efficiency (>80%) at zero mileage are in growing demand to meet increasingly tight vehicle emission standards for particulate matter being implemented in US, EU, China and elsewhere. Current efforts to achieve high filter performance mainly focus on fine-tuning the filter structure, such as the pore size distribution and porosity of the bare substrate, or the washcoat loading and location of catalyzed substrates. However, high filtration efficiency may have a cost in high backpressure that negatively affects engine power. On the other hand, it has been recognized in a few reports that very low amounts of ash deposits (from non-combustible residue in the exhaust) can significantly increase filtration efficiency with only a mild backpressure increase.

Gasoline Particulate Filter Efficiency and Backpressure at Very Low Mileage

The need for gasoline particulate filter (GPF) technology is expected to grow with increasingly tight particle emissions standards being implemented in US, EU, China and elsewhere. Derived from the successful experience with diesel particulate filters (DPF), GPFs adopted the characteristic alternately plugged honeycomb structure that provides a large area of porous cordierite wall for filtering particles with minimal additional backpressure. However, unlike DPFs, continuous soot regeneration in GPFs makes it difficult to grow and sustain the soot cake on the filter wall that gives DPFs their high filtration efficiency. Therefore, filtration performance of low mileage GPFs relies heavily on the porous structure of filter media, which depends on both the substrate and the applied washcoat. In this work, a blank, two fresh washcoated filters and two washcoated filters with 3000 km mileage accumulation were characterized to compare their filtration performance.

Impact of Ester Structures on the Soot Characteristics and Soot Oxidative Reactivity of Biodiesel

A study and analysis of the relation of biodiesel chemical structures to the resulting soot characteristics and soot oxidative reactivity is presented. Soot samples generated from combustion of various methyl esters, alkanes, biodiesel and diesel fuels in laminar co-flow diffusion flames are analyzed to evaluate the impact of fuel-bound oxygen in fatty acid esters on soot oxidation behavior. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of soot samples collected from diffusion flames show that chemical variations in biodiesel ester compounds have an impact on soot oxidative reactivity and soot characteristics in contrast to findings reported previously in the literature. Soot derived from methyl esters with shorter alkyl chains, such as methyl butyrate and methyl hexanoate, exhibit higher reactivity than those with longer carbon chain lengths, such as methyl oleate, which are more representative of biodiesel fuels.

A New Approach for Very Low Particulate Mass Emissions Measurement

Pending reductions in light duty vehicle PM emissions standards from 10 to 3 mg/mi and below will push the limits of the gravimetric measurement method. At these levels the PM mass collected approaches the mass of non-particle gaseous species that adsorb onto the filter from exhaust and ambient air. This introduces an intrinsic lower limit to filter based measurement that is independent of improvements achieved in weighing metrology. The statistical variability of back-up filter measurements at these levels makes them an ineffective means for correcting the adsorption artifact. The proposed subtraction of a facility based estimate of the artifact will partially alleviate the mass bias from adsorption, but its impact on weighing variability remains a problem that can reach a significant fraction of the upcoming 3 and future 1 mg/mi standards. This paper proposes an improved PM mass method that combines the gravimetric filter approach with real time aerosol measurement.

Evaluation of Partial Flow Dilution Methodology for Light Duty Particulate Mass Measurement

Two different implementations of Partial Flow Dilution (PFD) methodology designed for gravimetric particulate matter (PM) sampling are evaluated for applicability to light-duty chassis emissions testing. Filter PM measurements were collected and compared to constant volume sampler (CVS) full dilution tunnel PM filter measurements and other real-time PM measurement technologies, using gasoline vehicles generating a range of 0.1 to 10.0 mg/mile PM. Exhaust samples were collected for each phase of the Federal Test Procedure (FTP-75) with a fourth filter sample collected for the US06 supplemental cycle. Both PFDs satisfactorily met proportionality criteria for conventional combustion engines, but some improvements are needed for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The PM mass collected scaled linearly with the CVS tunnel samples, with slopes of 1.03 and 0.74 for the two PFDs.

Motor Vehicle PM Emissions Measurement at LEV III Levels

This paper examines the issues concerning particulate matter (PM) emissions measurement at the 3 mg/mi level proposed as the future LEV III standard. These issues are general in nature, but are exacerbated at the low levels contemplated for upcoming emissions standards. They are discussed in the context of gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines, where they can have an important impact on the continued development of this technology for improved fuel economy. GDI particulate emissions, just as engine-out diesel PM, contain a high fraction of soot. But the total PM mass is significantly lower than from diesel engines, and there can be significant variations in emissions rate and apparent PM composition between cold-start and running emissions. PM emissions levels depend on sampling method and location. As a result, there can be substantial differences in PM sampled and diluted directly at the exhaust pipe, as opposed to measurements from a dilution tunnel.

Effects of B20 versus ULSD Fuel on Diesel Engine PM Emissions and Aftertreatment Performance

A detailed study is undertaken to examine how 2010+ diesel engine exhaust emissions change when a soybean-derived B20 biodiesel fuel is used instead of a conventional ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel and to investigate how these changes impact the aftertreatment system. Particulate matter (PM) emissions for each fuel are characterized in terms of mass emissions, size distributions, organic versus soot fraction, metals content, and particle morphology. PM mass recorded by Dekati Mass Monitor, thermal analysis of quartz filters, and calculated from particle size distributions consistently shows a 2 - 3 fold decrease in engine-out soot emissions over a wide mid-load range when changing from ULSD to B20 fuel. This is partly due to a decrease in particle number and partly to a decrease in average size. HC and NO emissions, in contrast, exhibit little change with fuel type.

Investigation of EURO-5/6 Level Particle Number Emissions of European Diesel Light Duty Vehicles

Particle number emissions are measured with two instruments according to the upcoming European emission regulations for light-duty diesel passenger vehicles and compared to data from other methods, including the current regulatory total particulate matter (PM) mass, photo-acoustic soot sensor (PASS) and engine exhaust particle sizer (EEPS). At the very low emission levels of diesel particulate filter (DPF) equipped vehicles, the solid particle number data correlate well with soot mass and with particle number measured by EEPS, if only those particles belonging to the accumulation mode are considered in the latter case. PN differences of ≻100% between tests of the same vehicle are observed. Comparison of the two PN instruments and the photoacoustic soot sensor show that these are systematic differences which originate primarily with the vehicle and not from instrument uncertainties.

Using Ejector Diluters to Sample Vehicle Exhaust at Elevated Pressures and Temperatures

This paper presents an alternative and relatively simple method which allows the use of ordinary ejector-type diluters over a wide range of sample inlet conditions including elevated pressures and temperatures. After calibration of the ejector diluter, the dilution can be accurately characterized using only the pressures at the inlet and the outlet of the diluter and the sample temperature. The method is based on a semi-empirical, stationary model taking into account the critical parameters needed to predict the dilution factor. Under steady state operation it achieves accuracies estimated to be below ±8% (95% confidence interval) for diluter inlet pressures in the range of 1000 - 4000 mbar absolute and temperatures between 20 - 200°C. Performance under actual vehicle testing conditions is evaluated upstream of the DPF for a diesel vehicle run on a chassis dynamometer.

Detailed Hydrocarbon Species and Particulate Emissions from a HCCI Engine as a Function of Air-Fuel Ratio

Concentrations of individual species in the engine-out exhaust gas from a gasoline-fueled (101.5 or 91.5 RON), direct-injection, compression-ignition (HCCI) engine have been measured by gas chromatography over the A/F range 50 to 230 for both stratified and nearly homogeneous fuel-air mixtures. The species identified include hydrocarbons, oxygenated organic species, CO, and CO2. A single-cylinder HCCI engine (CR = 15.5) with heated intake charge was used. Measurements of the mass and size distribution of particulate emissions were also performed. The 101.5 RON fuel consisted primarily of five species, simplifying interpretation of the exhaust species data: iso-pentane (24%), iso-octane (22%), toluene (17%), xylenes (10%), and trimethylbenzenes (9%).

Time-Resolved Measurements of Exhaust PM for FTP-75:Comparison of LII, ELPI, and TEOM Techniques

A direct comparison is made of time-resolved measurements of diesel PM emissions obtained using laser-induced incandescence (LII), an electrical low pressure impactor (ELPI), and a tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM). The measurements were made on two diesel passenger vehicles, one of which was equipped with a diesel particulate filter. Both LII and the ELPI performed well for both vehicles, whereas the TEOM lacked the sensitivity required for the filtered vehicle. We estimate that the LII system used has a limit of detection better than 0.2 mg/mi.

PM Measurement Artifact: Organic Vapor Deposition on Different Filter Media

PM (Particulate Matter) emitted by vehicles and engines is most often measured quantitatively by collecting diluted exhaust samples on filters that are weighed pre-and post-test. The filter media used have high efficiency for small particles found in vehicle exhaust, but they also collect organic matter from the vapor phase with a lower, but nonzero, efficiency. In the past, organic vapor adsorption was usually negligible compared with PM levels from untreated diesel engine exhaust. For vehicles employing a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and emitting very low PM, that is no longer the case. This paper reports measurements of the organic vapor deposition artifact for different filter media, including the two types (TX40 and Teflo) called for by the 2007 regulations for heavy duty diesel engines. The vapor artifact represents a substantial fraction of the 2007 regulatory standard of 10 mg/mi for light duty vehicles.

Performance of a Catalyzed Diesel Particulate Filter System During Soot Accumulation and Regeneration

The trapping and regeneration behaviors of a diesel particulate filter (DPF), including particle size, are examined via engine dynamometer testing. The exhaust system consists of two active lean NOx (ALN) catalysts in series followed by a catalyzed DPF. Forced regenerations are accomplished by injecting diesel fuel into the exhaust in front of the ALN catalysts to generate an exotherm sufficient to induce soot oxidation. Results are reported for two diesel fuels, one with 340 ppm sulfur, and the other with 4 ppm sulfur, and as a function of DPF regeneration temperature. The results show the DPF to be very effective at removing particulate matter, >99% efficiency. The <1% of particles that escape trapping exhibit a size distribution very similar to engine out soot. During regeneration, particle emissions remain well below engine out levels for the low sulfur fuel, but exhibit a temporary nucleation mode of about ten times the engine out level for the high sulfur fuel.

Brake Dynamometer Measurement of Airborne Brake Wear Debris

In order to assess the amount of airborne particulate matter (PM) attributable to vehicle disk brakes, a system was devised for collecting brake wear debris on a laboratory brake dynamometer. The brake dynamometer test hardware was enclosed and vented through a duct in which the airflow was controlled to ensure isokinetic sampling. Two brake dynamometer simulations were implemented: urban driving (low velocity, low g) and the Auto Motor und Sport (AMS, high velocity, high g). These test procedures were performed repeatedly on the brake system hardware of vehicles utilizing three different friction material types: low-metallic, semi-metallic, and non-asbestos organic (NAO). Airborne brake wear was collected on filters and via other airborne PM sampling techniques. Larger, non-airborne wear debris was collected from the wheel, below the brake, and brushed off the hardware. Considering the effect of the wheel, 50-70% of the collected wear debris was airborne PM.

Particulate Matter Emission During Start-up and Transient Operation of a Spark-Ignition Engine (2): Effect of Speed, Load, and Real-World Driving Cycles

Previous research into Particulate Matter (PM) emissions from a spark-ignition engine has shown that the main factor determining the how PM emissions respond to transient engine operating conditions is the effect of those conditions on intake port processes such as fuel evaporation. The current research extends the PM emissions data base by examining the effect of transient load and speed operating conditions, as well as engine start-up and shut-down. In addition, PM emissions are examined during “real-world” driving conditions - specifically, the Federal Test Procedure. Unlike the previous work, which was performed on an engine test stand with no exhaust gas recirculation and with a non-production engine controller, the current tests are performed on a fully-functional, production vehicle operated on a chassis dynamometer to better examine real world emissions.

Particulate Emissions from a Direct-Injection Spark-Ignition (DISI) Engine

The numbers, sizes, and derived mass emissions of particles from a production DISI engine are examined over a range of engine operating conditions. Particles are sampled directly from the exhaust pipe using heated ejector pump diluters. The size distributions are measured using a scanning mobility particle sizer. The numbers and sizes of the emitted particles are reported for stratified versus homogeneous operation and as a function of fuel injection timing, spark timing, engine speed, and engine load. The principal finding is that particle number emissions increase by about a factor of 10 - 40 going from homogeneous to stratified charge operation. The particulate emissions exhibit a strong sensitivity to injection timing; generally particle number and volume concentrations increase steeply as the injection timing is retarded, except over a narrow portion of the range where the trend reverses.

Vehicle Exhaust Particle Size Distributions: A Comparison of Tailpipe and Dilution Tunnel Measurements

This paper explores the extent to which standard dilution tunnel measurements of motor vehicle exhaust particulate matter modify particle number and size. Steady state size distributions made directly at the tailpipe, using an ejector pump, are compared to dilution tunnel measurements for three configurations of transfer hose used to transport exhaust from the vehicle tailpipe to the dilution tunnel. For gasoline vehicles run at a steady 50 - 70 mph, ejector pump and dilution tunnel measurements give consistent results of particle size and number when using an uninsulated stainless steel transfer hose. Both methods show particles in the 10 - 100 nm range at tailpipe concentrations of the order of 104 particles/cm3.
