Electric Motor Noise Reduction with Stator Mounted NVH Insert Ring

Electric motor noise mitigation is a challenge in electric vehicles (EVs) due to the lack of engine masking noise. The design of the electric motor mounting configuration to the motor housing has significant impacts on the radiated noise of the drive unit. The stator can be bolted or interference-fit with the housing. A bolted stator creates motor whine and vibration excited by the motor torque ripple at certain torsional resonance frequencies. A stator with interference fit configuration stiffens the motor housing and pushes resonances to a higher frequency range, where masking noise levels are higher at faster vehicle speeds. However, this comes with additional cost and manufacturing process and may impact motor efficiency due to high stress on stators. In this paper, a thin sheet metal NVH ring is developed as a tunable stiffness device between the stator and the motor housing. It is pre-compressed and provides additional torsional rigidity to mitigate torsional excitations.

Methodology for Controlling Rattle Noise in Vehicle Turbocharger Wastegate System

When a turbocharger exhaust-driven turbine wheel spins fast enough to produce the desired level of boost, a wastegate is typically used to allow the excess exhaust pressure to divert around the turbine wheel. By opening the wastegate (typically boost-pressure referenced), exhaust pressure bypasses the turbo’s turbine wheel to prevent the turbo from reaching an unsafe speed. To actuate wastegate, different actuating mechanisms like pneumatic, vacuum or electric are available, which regulates poppet valve positions e.g. full close, open or partially open. In electronic wastegate valve, exhaust pressure pass through the bypass hole collides with the face of valve causing vibration. Such vibration is transmitted to the wastegate components causing rattle noise. It is challenging to design a wastegate mechanism which can sustain wastegate loads at high temperature and give quiet and robust performance within the full operating range of the engine.

Automotive Turbocharger Rotor Optimization Using Machine Learning Technique

Turbochargers are widely employed in internal combustion engines, in both, diesel and gasoline vehicle, to boost the power without any extra fuel usage. Turbocharger comes in different sizes based upon the boost pressure to increase. Capacity of turbocharger are available in great range in the market which are designed to match the requirement. From structural point of view, key component of an automotive turbocharger is rotor. This rotor consists of compressor wheel, turbine wheel, shaft and bearing (journal/ball) mainly. In industries, design & development of turbocharger rotor for its dynamic characteristics is done using virtual engineering technique (Computer Aided Engineering). Multibody dynamic (MBD) analysis simulation is one of the best approaches which is used to study the rotor in great details. In this current MBD procedure fluid-structure interaction problem is solved by modelling oil film in the journal bearing and solving it using “Reynolds equation”.

Purge Pump Rotor Dynamics Subjected to Ball Bearing Inner and Outer Race Wear Defects

The purge pump is used to pull evaporative gases from canister and send to engine for combustion in Turbocharged engines. The purge pump with impeller at one end and electric motor at the other end is supported by the ball bearing assembly. A bearing kinematic model to predict forcing function due to defect in ball bearing arrangement, coupled with bearing dynamic model of rotor because of rotating component, is proposed in this paper to get accumulated effect on transmitted force to the purge pump housing. Rotor dynamic of purge pump rotor components only produces certain order forcing responses which can be simulated into the multibody software environment, knowing the ball bearing geometry parameters hence providing stiffness parameter for rotor system.

The Effect of Oil Debris in Turbocharger Journal Bearings on Subsynchronous NVH

Instances have occurred where the outer surface of turbocharger fully floating journal bearing bushings have exhibited damage from oil debris resulting in constant tone noise and subsequent warranty claims. This paper studies the effect of oil debris in Turbocharger journal bearings on Subsynchronous NVH. A CFD model is built to study the behavior of oil debris particles with different sizes. It is found that the dominant centrifugal forces prevent larger particles from reaching the inner film while smaller particles travel more easily to the inner film. It is also found that the turbine side is more likely to become damaged from debris than the compressor side bearing due to higher temperatures. A tribology analysis shows that oil debris particles in the outer film will reduce the speed ratio, while oil debris particles in inner film will increase the speed ratio. The tribology analysis also predicts the effects of oil debris on bearing stiffness and damping.

An Engineering Method for Part-load Engine Simulation

This work provides an effective engineering method of building a part-load engine simulation model from a wide-open throttle (WOT) engine model and available dynamometer data. It shows how to perform part-load engine simulation using optimizer for targeted manifold absolute air pressure (MAP) on a basic matrix of engine speed and MAP. Key combustion parameters were estimated to cover the entire part-load region based on affordable assumptions and limitations. Engine rubbing friction and pumping friction were combined to compare against the motoring torque. The emission data from GM dynamometer laboratory were used to compare against engine simulation results after attaching the RLT sensor to record emission data in the engine simulation model.

Dynamic Stress Correlation and Modeling of Driveline Bending Integrity for 4WD Sport Utility Vehicles

Reducing the high cost of hardware testing with analytical methods has been highly accelerated in the automotive industry. This paper discusses an analytical model to simulate the driveline bending integrity test for the longitudinal 4WD-driveline configuration. The dynamic stresses produced in the adapter/transfer case and propeller shaft can be predicted analytically using this model. Particularly, when the 4WD powertrain experiences its structural bending during the operation speed and the propeller shaft experiences the critical whirl motion and its structural bending due to the inherent imbalance. For a 4WD-Powertrain application, the dynamic coupling effect of a flexible powertrain with a flexible propeller shaft is significant and demonstrated in this paper. Three major subsystems are modeled in this analytical model, namely the powertrain, the final rear drive, and the propeller shafts.

Dynamic Analysis of a 3D Finger Follower Valve Train System Coupled with Flexible Camshafts

A 3D dynamic model has been developed to investigate the dynamic response of a finger-follower cam system by considering the interaction between valve train and camshaft. The torsional moments being different for each cam cause the torsional vibrations of the camshaft. The resulting speed fluctuations of the cam affect the dynamics of other valve train components including the ultimate valve motion. To better represent the critical parts of the valve train, special attention was given to the cam and follower and to valve springs. The cam and follower are treated as a force contact relation so parts can separate and impact again. The valve springs are now treated as flexible bodies and important mass effects and coil contact events are captured during the simulation. The mass effects are associated with spring surge that occurs at high speed. Coil contact occurs when the individual coil in the spring collides. One bank of a V6 engine with overhead twin cams is modeled in this study.
